City Editor

Summary:
The Fitchburg Sentinel & Enterprise newspaper in Fitchburg, Mass. seeks an experienced journalist to serve as a City Editor, directing coverage and editing daily and longer-term stories for the newspaper's website and print editions.

What you will do:

• Coordinating our news coverage of Fitchburg and the surrounding communities
• The City Editor will be responsible for coordinating our news coverage of Fitchburg and the surrounding communities, as well as maintaining and updating the newspaper website
• This role also oversees content and production of the weekly Nashoba Valley Voice
• This position oversees daily content for Lifestyle and Op-Ed pages that are shared between the Sentinel and the Lowell Sun
• This editor must be flexible to work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis as well as odd hours if necessary or if news requires
• Ability to contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration and willingness to experiment with new digital tools and platforms
• You will also contribute spot reporting on an as-needed basis

What you will bring:

• Three to five years of experience as an editor at a daily newspaper or online news outlet
• Minimum of three years of experience as an editor, who is a skilled wordsmith and master of AP style, who has a sharp eye for detail, and who can work closely with a small reporting staff of a reporter and sports editor augmented by several freelancers
• Proven ability to direct reporters through breaking news situations and post accurate stories online quickly
• Relevant experience in news editing, reporting and writing, using social media, creating enterprising content
• Strong editing, writing, organizational and story structure skills
• Understanding of the imperatives of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile and print
• Experience working with web content-management systems and be well-versed in social media and search-engine optimization
• A degree in journalism or communication, or equivalent experience
