Climate Change Intern

Mathematica applies expertise at the intersection of data, methods, policy, and practice to improve well-being around the world. We collaborate closely with public- and private-sector partners to translate big questions into deep insights that improve programs, refine strategies, and enhance understanding using data science and analytics. Our work yields actionable information to guide decisions in wide-ranging policy areas, from health, education, early childhood, and family support to nutrition, employment, disability, and international development.
Mathematica's climate interns will assist the climate practice in various areas including provide research and business development support at the intersection of climate and agriculture, and climate and health. Research tasks include supporting strategy, design and learning support for climate programs, using remote sensing for climate adaptation interventions in agriculture, assessing systems resilience to climate change, and using climate data to assess the impact of climate on increasing health risks.
We are looking to hire two interns in this role - one focusing on impact of climate on health and the other focusing on impact of climate on agriculture. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to:
- Work alongside our subject matter experts in the area of climate practice as it intersects with agriculture or health.
- Build relationships and work closely with other business development leaders across the company.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of Mathematica's capabilities, competitive environment, and market to inform strategic business development efforts.
Responsibilities:
An intern's responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following tasks:
- Supporting quantitative and/or qualitative analyses, including cleaning, organizing, and analyzing data including the use of remote sensing data and artificial intelligence to assess the impact of climate on health and/or agriculture.
- Assisting in writing sections of reports, briefs, memos, and other research and policy documents
- Supporting strategy, design and learning support for climate programs.
- Scanning competitive industry trends and conducting business intelligence to produce business landscape status reports for strategic clients.
- Perform literature searches and reviews.
- Support the design of engaging presentations, translating complex or conceptual thoughts into more concrete and clear information.
- Drafting correspondence, assembling presentation materials, recording notes for meetings, and documenting findings.
Position Requirements:
- Must be enrolled in master's-level or Ph.D. program in public policy, public health, natural resource management, sociology, psychology, economics, education, computer science, social work or related discipline.
- Demonstrated interest in public policy research and/or data specifically as it relates to climate and agriculture/health/energy.
- Exposure to social science research methods and design and a passion for technology.
- Proficiency in R, Stata, and/or Python.
- Familiarity or experience with GIS workflows and software, preferred.
- Familiarity or experience working with large remote sensing datasets.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with flexibility to handle multiple tasks and work on multiple projects.
- Highly motivated, detail-oriented, and self-directed, with strong interpersonal skills.
- Desire and ability to work as part of a research team.
- Willingness to take on challenges, learn new subject matter, and think creatively.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and/or PowerPoint

This internship will offer 25-40 hrs./week for a period of 10 weeks at an anticipated hourly rate of $21-$26/hour.
