The role
The ideal CMS Technical Director at Kin + Carta is an innovative, strategic problem solver, who has a passion for partnering with clients to drive functional and business technical solutions for content management system implementation projects. You will play a critical role in bridging the gap between client stakeholders and the engineering teams.Â
This role will live within the Engineering Platform Practice at Kin + Carta and is the foundation of support for content and commerce projects.
On a daily basis the CMS Technical Director will oversee the delivery of content-based projects using a variety of leading CMS tools, specifically MACH tools like Contentstack and Contentful and DXPs like Optimizely and AEM. The CMS Technical Director is responsible for the implementation of the technical workstreams in K+C web projects that use these platforms, in alignment with the Practice Leadership team. This is a client facing, fully billable role that will require hands-on development activities.
Role responsibilities
- Client Interaction:Â
- Work closely with client stakeholders to understand current system functionality and gather insights into future state goals. Work closely with client stakeholders to understand current system functionality and gather insights into future state goals.
- Provide client-facing communication for the entirety of the technical team within the context of a project.Â
- Be comfortable and effective when interfacing with CIOs, client technical directors, client project managers and client development teams
- Engineering Leadership:Â
- Own the technical leadership role for K+C projects, aligning with the project management team and collaborating with other critical disciplines, including design, requirements development, QA testing and post-launch Managed Services support
- Oversee and lead the technical implementation of projects that utilize Contentstack, Contentful, Optimizely and AEM.Â
- Develop technical architecture that includes platform implementation, integration points, customizations, content and data migration focuses while ensuring high performance and security in our technical solutions
- Align with operations, supply management, client teams and talent acquisition to hire the right team members against our current client requirements, needs of the practice and our company principles.
- CMS Subject Matter Expert:
- Can play a CMS Solution Architect role on a project or can lead CMS Solution Architects to validate best practices for implementation and alignment to specific project goals
- Document platform-specific best practices for code development, performance, security, technical architecture and serve as a mentor to Tech Leads, Developers and other members of the Engineering Platform Practice
- Team Leadership:
- Screen technical development resources as part of our staffing process to ensure that we place the right developers into the right projects
- When needed, provide hands-on coding to help deliver projectsÂ
- Maintain full billable status throughout project delivery
- Manage key members of the practice, and ensure delegation of high quality management to others as necessary.Â
- Facilitate and coach others on resolving craft-related delivery issues.
- Cross functional Collaboration:Â
- Work closely with sales, marketing, strategy, design and research, to ensure alignment throughout the product.Â
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical team members to ensure a shared understanding of requirements.
Minimum qualifications

- Consulting or agency experience is a requirement.Â
- 10 years experience delivering software and leading CMS & Commerce platform technology solutions, including: Contentful, Contentstack, Optimizely DXP (formerly Episerver) and/or Adobe AEM. Either experience in Optimizely or Contentstack is required. Â
- 5 years experience participating in sales pursuits, estimating new projects and pitching deals
- 5 years of engineering management experience, including 2 years of managing managers
- Highly professional communication skills, both written and verbal
- Experience growing the skills and leadership capacity of engineering teams.
- Experience building psychologically safe environments that encourage everyone to contribute their ideas and feedback to the conversation.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and collaborating across all areas of the business to drive initiatives forward.
- Strong organizational and team leadership skills
Preferred qualifications
- Certification in one or more of the following CMS platforms: Contentful, Contentstack, Optimizely DXP (formerly Episerver) and/or Adobe AEM
- Exposure to a wide variety of industries and vertical markets
- Experience working in high-end consulting and agency environments with highly visible clients
