Summary
The Coatings Specialist manages the production operations for various areas of the coating operations at a variety of SMS group Inc. locations as assigned by management. Continually optimizing the processes and materials required for application of the various coatings supplied from the facilities. Develops and introduces new coatings and defines the required ancillary equipment needed for the processes.

What you'll do
- Responsible for knowledge of electroplating processes
- Copper, Nickel and Nickel Alloy Plating of Mold Copper Plates
- Chrome and Nickel Alloy Plating of Cold Mill work rolls
- Responsible for knowledge of thermal spray processes
- HVOF thermal spray of mold copper plates (UniGuard process)
- HVOF and plasma thermal spray of process line rolls (Tocalo Spec process)
- Wire Arc thermal spray of work roll chocks
- General knowledge and ability to support submerged and open arc roll welding process.
- Development, review, and audit of job safety hazard analysis documentation.
- Plays an integral part in the facility's safety program. Responsible for the safety of the employees.
- Monitors the quality of work performed by the employees.
- Responsible for ongoing efficiency improvements of the hourly employees.
- Develops and documents coating processes and testing procedures for above processes.
- Is a key team member in the research, development, evaluation, and roll-out of new and current production coating consumables, processes, and equipment.
- Works in a team environment to help develop new coating solutions or create new applications for existing coatings.
- Communicates with coatings experts from the international organization regarding on-going and future coatings trials and R&D project developments, and provides routine updates to the workshops and management team.
- Ability to test and adjust chemical levels of electroplating baths.
- Performs programming required for various coating application equipment (robotics programming).
- Performs job cost estimating and specifies/orders departmental consumables including making sure different workshops are using similar costing formulas.
- Trains local and sister company employees on coating procedures, properties, and application methods.
- Support sales with customer visits both at the mill site as well as in our workshops when customers are visiting.
- Post coating application review of coatings for alloy composition, bonding and microstructure.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
- Indirect supervision of workshop employees engaged in activities with the coatings areas. At times direct supervision of hourly employees could be required at the discretion of specific plant management.
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
What you'll need
- Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, with one to two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and can deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Computer skills: ADP (Time and Attendance), AutoCAD, Spreadsheet, Word Processing Software, and Coating Equipment Programming.
- Problem solving - Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations; Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.
