Coding Education Manager

Job Summary

Responsible for establishing and managing coding training and education for Medical Coders within the health system including direct management over the Coding School. The education manager will develop, implement, and deliver all coding educational plans and work with the system services coding department on identified coding educational needs.Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelors degree in Health Information Management or related field, Master’s degree in a health-related discipline or education preferred

Licenses/Certifications: 

• Registered Health Information Management Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) and

• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or Certified Outpatient Coding Specialist (COC) required

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

• Minimum of five (5) years coding or coding review and three (3) years progressive leadership

• Effective oral and written communication skills

Principal Accountabilities

• Provides direction and manage the day-to-day functions within the coding education department; supervise coding instructors; develops and administer curriculum for students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for ICD-10 and CPT coding.

• Administers admission process for coding trainee program.

• Assists coding instructors with development of instructional materials to include course plans, objectives, and evaluation tools.

• Assists in department budget and identifies and recommend opportunities to decrease costs and improve service.

• Actively participates in the development and implementation of standardized organization-wide coding guidelines and documentation requirements and implement training and educational programs for coding specialists.

• Provides consulting services in the area of coding to physicians and departments organizational wide; keeps abreast of new technology in coding and stays informed about future issues impacting coding; acts as a liaison for departments regarding coding questions.

• Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

• Promotes individuals professional growth and development to ensure the coding instructors have the skills and knowledge to perform their coding education; supports department base goals which contribute to the financial success of the organization; create an environment conducive to self-motivation, personal growth, and team work.
