Community Ceramics Studio Manager
Job Description
Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well-being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new facilities house fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.
The Ceramic Studio Manager reports to the Ceramic Studio Director and will participate in all aspects of community studio management and fabrication. The ceramic studio manager plays a crucial role in maintaining the studio's daily operations, program development, and culture.
Areas of responsibility will include:
Community Ceramic StudioÂ
- Manage a team of ceramic studio technicians
- Hold recurring 1:1 meetings with techniciansÂ
- Train existing and new staff in new processes, administrative work, member services, and fabrication techniques as needed
- Scheduling – organize coverage for time off requestsÂ
- Update colleagues with goals and tasksÂ
- Assist in collaborating with the technology department as it relates to membership and fabricationÂ
- Assist in planning AIR and Fellowship ProgramÂ
- Maintain and improve studio maintenance schedule to keep up with changesÂ
- Work with the Ceramic Studio Director to develop and implement workshop capabilities, operations, and protocolsÂ
- Member services – provide members with assistance and service, including answering all queries, distributing materials, assistance with the firing process, and all issues as they relate to artist membership
- Assist in planning and executing specialty workshopsÂ
- Create accessible, accurate, user-friendly signage and instructions for various processes and equipmentÂ
- Conduct orientations and training for membersÂ
- Monitor and educate members on health and safety best practicesÂ
- Track and maintain inventoryÂ
- Load and monitor kilns
- Mix glaze and clayÂ
- Recycle materials such as clay, slip, and glazeÂ
- Assist in equipment maintenance and repairÂ
- Collaboratively clean the studio dailyÂ
- Occasional work required outside of regularly scheduled hoursÂ
Fabrication
- Under the direction of the Ceramic Studio Director, execute fabrication projects on schedule and within budget to the best of our ability
- Research and develop innovative fabrication techniques and methods
- Collaborate with other staff, shops, and departments on projects as needed DevelopmentÂ
- Work with the Ceramic Studio Director to identify and invite ceramic artists to collaborate with Powerhouse Arts, such as fabrication, workshops, talks, etc.Â
- Explore partnerships with ceramic studios in the tri-state area
- Work with the Ceramic Studio Director to identify projects and collaborations with new clients–– including individual artists, institutions, and galleriesÂ
- Work with external partners who have complementary fabrication expertise
- Participate in Powerhouse Arts events and shop tours as neededÂ
- Occasional work required outside of regularly scheduled hoursÂ
Qualifications:

- 6+ years’ experience or the equivalent in ceramic studio operationsÂ
- Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, ability to problem-solveÂ
- Ability to prioritize shifting needs of a busy membership and fabrication studioÂ
- Desire to work within a community studio settingÂ
- Willingness to share knowledge and serve a robust community of artists
- Personnel managementÂ
- Schedule managementÂ
- Knowledge of best practices in health and safetyÂ
- Basic understanding of kiln repairÂ
- Glaze formulation, testing, and mixingÂ
- Materials recycling––clay, slip, glaze, etcÂ
- Basic handy skills for studio maintenance and upgradesÂ
- Proficient in one or more of the following: mold making, slip casting, wheel throwing, or hand buildingÂ
- Fluency in G SuiteÂ
Areas of interest but not mandatory
- Realistic/ figurative sculpting skillsÂ
- 3D printing in clay or other mediumsÂ
- Digital fabrication, CNC machiningÂ
- Ability to work in CAD programsÂ
- Ability to work with PS and IDÂ
Compensation & Benefits: Salary range is $70 - $75K, commensurate with experience.
