Compliance Analyst
Job Description
ABOUT NYSHEX
Have you ever stopped to wonder how your computer, clothes, furniture, or household goods made their way to your doorstep? Most of the things you own arrived here in a container on a container ship. It is a massive industry that we all heavily rely on but don’t think about much because it’s been done the same way for decades without much change or innovation. NYSHEX is a well-funded, series A start up that is transforming the centuries old shipping industry by solving its problems of inefficiency, unpredictability, and volatility and looking to capture $23 billion of economic waste annually.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Compliance Analyst at NYSHEX, you will own the day-to-day execution of our various compliance programs. You will help maintain both internal employee and customer-focused compliance initiatives. You will support the dispute and default management process at the heart of NYSHEX’s value proposition to our members. You will be the first point of contact for all NYSHEX vendor contracting, ensuring that vendor agreements are fair and beneficial to NYSHEX. You will partner with different departments across the company to create, maintain and update compliance processes and procedures as necessary.
This is a full-time, hybrid role reporting to our Head of Compliance. While we're currently operating remotely, NYSHEX will be implementing a hybrid working model in the future - nearly all NYSHEX staff globally will work from a NYSHEX office two days per week, and flexibly for the remainder of the week.
RESPONSIBILITIES
In this role you will:
- Own the day-to-day execution of NYSHEX’s Regulatory and Compliance programs
- Help maintain our Member Handbook, from proposing edits based on information gathered from contract review to assisting in the arbitration of rules issues
- Maintain our Employee Compliance program, ensuring that employees complete training in the required time and serving as the point of contact for troubleshooting and general questions
- Assist with NYSHEX’s default and dispute management programs
- Review shortfall cases against the rules, escalating as necessary,
- Create monitoring reports and other regulatory reports as needed to ensure visibility into any compliance gaps, proposing solutions where necessary
- Review contracts and agreements from NYSHEX’s vendors, flagging any issues to compliance leadership
- Partner with Operations, Account Management, People Operations, Finance and other teams on cross-functional Compliance projects as necessary
QUALIFICATIONS
You are a great fit for this role if you have:
- 1+ years of experience in a Regulatory or Compliance focused role

- The ability to effectively and flexibly work within the letter and spirit of rules and regulations, managing potential conflicts and ambiguity where it arises
- A history of enforcing compliance requirements with the highest integrity
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to translate complex regulatory and legal language into understandable, actionable guidance for the business
- A desire to work in a fast-paced, growing startup with constantly evolving needs, requirements, and products
You are an exceptional candidate if you also have:
- A JD

- Experience working or in an industry regulated by, or directly with, the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC)
