Computer Systems Analyst/Engineer

EMS Operations provides oversite and upkeep for computer systems that are used to ensure reliable operations of the bulk electric system for Southern Company Services Transmission's Energy Management Systems (EMS). Team member will participate in a rotation to provide administration and incident management for system users and other EMS teams.

Primary responsibility of this role will be the implementation, execution, and improvement of system back-up processes for the critical systems supported by EMS. The successful candidate must be able to leverage tools such as Veeam Availability Suite, Dell Networker, and ExeGrid to help EMS meet data retention and system recovery needs. As one of two backup administrators, this analyst will manage patching and lifecycle of the backup systems, work with other EMS teams to verify backups are functioning as designed, and work with compliance as well as application owners to ensure we meet regulatory requirements around back-up and disaster recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all functions pertaining to Backup and restoration services management
  • Troubleshooting backup performance problems reaching beyond backup/recovery tools (including 24x7 on-call support)
  • Check backup reports and monitor for failures, take corrective action when necessary
  • Ensure compliance with the backup and restoration services process
  • Inform the service owners on the capacity of the backup infrastructure (e.g. backup tapes, restoration infrastructure, etc.)
  • Produce the necessary reports (e.g. trend analysis, backup infrastructure capacity) for service improvement and management reporting purposes
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards, policies and procedures
  • Develop backup and restoration strategies for a wide array of different systems
  • Coordinate and lead vendor management and purchase decisions
Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Minimum 5 years' experience designing, deploying, and managing backup infrastructure
  • Extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of backup and recovery solutions used for computers running Windows, Windows Server, and RedHat Linux
  • Working knowledge of Veeam and Networker backup technologies in both physical and virtualized environments
  • Familiar with managing disk storage systems, data deduplication, and storage libraries
  • Knowledge of network concepts and troubleshooting as it pertains to back and storage solutions
  • Computer scripting (Python, PowerShell, SSH, etc.) skills are a plus
  • Aptitude for learning and ability to incorporate new skills and technologies
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; team player
  • Candidate must be organized and analytical, able to plan effectively to eliminate delivery obstacles through adaptive approaches
  • Ability to lead discussions and formulate strategies around system recovery and backup philosophies
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities and delegate when necessary
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues and to work under time pressures
  • Must have a customer focused attitude with a desire to learn about utility core business

Experience and Education:

  • Degree in Computer information Systems, Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting computer systems in an Enterprise setting
