Computer Vision Intern (Summer)

The Elevator Pitch 

Do you want to gain hands-on experience in Computer Vision? Are you eager to learn and develop critical skills for your future career? Do you have an interest in developing strategies and interpreting results?

In this 10-week Computer Vision Intern role, you will help to come up with strategies and specific implementations to assist operators in correctly interpreting our Express system's threat detection results. This work will likely involve designing methods for understanding threat-related data and using that for creating notations to augment existing Express images. Not only will you be gaining critical skills in computer vision, but you will also gain exposure to the ins and outs of the company, to the other departments, and how they operate.

Success in the Role: What are performance outcomes over the first half and second half of the internship you will work toward completing? 

In the first 5 weeks, you will:

• Understand Evolv, our product and culture, what we do, and why we do it
• Have a good understanding of the problem at hand and Express system geometry
• Collect an experimental dataset and define threat context (algorithms establishing correlation between threats and people in the scene)

• Start to come up with graphical interface schemes you would like to experiment with
• Prove to be attentive to detail and creative

In the last 5 weeks, you will:

• Implement several graphical user interface schemes, that may be used for Express still images and/or movies

• Compile a presentation/demo to share your work with the Algorithms team and other groups
• Have a better idea of what you want or don’t want out of your career
• Be able to look back throughout the internship and feel as if you had contributed something meaningful and impactful to the company
• Walk away from the internship proud of what you accomplished

The Work: What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

• Develop strategies and specific implementations to assist operators in correctly interpreting Express’s threat detection results
• Develop 3-5 graphical user interface schemes that we may want to implement

• Assess return on investment for these schemes, i.e., complexity of software implementation versus perceived improvement in threat presentation clarity
• Present these ideas to the ATD group for discussion

• Implement graphical user interface schemes

• Produce presentable demos

• Understand the system geometry and placement of cameras, the problem at hand, and collect and organize the scans for different scenarios in the first 2-3 weeks

• Develop business savviness by sitting in on department Q&As and Executive Leadership presentations to gain knowledge from individuals in different departments and levels at Evolv

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team? 

• You will be joining the Engineering team and reporting to the Senior Computer Vision Engineer. The Algorithms team is comprised of 5 team members with a range of experience levels from entry, mid and senior.

Where is the role located? 

• The location of this role is based in Waltham, MA with some flexibility in being remote some days.
• This is a paid internship with a range of $15-$21 an hour, dependent on your academic school year.
