The Position

The Control Systems Engineer will be responsible for overseeing and optimizing the control systems associated with photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects. This role involves managing server and network infrastructure, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures, and coordinating with cross-functional teams to enhance system performance and reliability. The Control Systems Engineer will work closely with the Asset Management and Operations team and report directly to the Manager of SCADA & Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Control Systems Management:
    • Design, implement, and maintain control systems for PV, PV+Energy Storage, and standalone energy storage projects.
    • Collaborate with SCADA and Controls developers to define and integrate plant control requirements.
  • Server and Network Coordination: 
    • Oversee the procurement, configuration, and management of site servers and network infrastructure.
    • Coordinate with ISPs to ensure reliable internet service for operational technology.
  • Cybersecurity and System Integrity:
    • Develop and implement cybersecurity measures to protect control systems and network infrastructure.
    • Review and enhance network and system specifications to mitigate cybersecurity risks and ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Technical Due Diligence and Troubleshooting:
    • Perform technical evaluations of emerging technologies in energy storage and control systems.
    • Lead troubleshooting efforts for connectivity, data, and control issues within the operational technology framework.
  • Vendor Coordination and Project Support:
    • Manage and coordinate with vendors for the installation, configuration, and maintenance of remote servers, switches, and firewalls.
    • Oversee the turnover and operation phase of projects, ensuring adherence to operational and maintenance (O&M) requirements.
  • Compliance and Documentation:
    • Ensure all projects comply with regulatory requirements, including those set by NERC, WECC, and interconnection facilities.
    • Develop and maintain documentation related to control systems, cybersecurity protocols, and project specifications.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in control systems engineering, with hands-on experience in managing control systems for energy projects, including PV and energy storage systems.
  • Proficiency in control system programming (e.g., PLCs, SCADA, DCS).
  • Experience with server and network management, including security protocols and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective collaboration and documentation.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills.

Education Requirements

  •  Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
