The Role

Metropolis is looking for a driven Controller to lead and drive our accounting function and reporting framework as we scale the business. You will be responsible for leading and developing a high performing distributed team of 20+, developing the financial systems and operations roadmap, driving process improvement, and ensuring our contracts, policies and documentation align with business needs and compliance requirements. You must be a hands-on, roll up your sleeves type of leader and should enjoy a fast-paced, start-up environment. The position requires strong financial, accounting and management skills, a strong business sense and the ability to understand the big picture while being detail oriented. This role reports to VP of Finance and will work closely with Sales, Central Operations, Field Operations, and Legal functions as well as the rest of the finance and accounting team and broader leadership team.


Responsibilities

● Ownership of our financial close and reporting cycles, including consolidations for executive reporting, ensuring accuracy and timeliness

● Determine, define, and manage technical accounting areas to support business growth and new initiatives, e.g., Revenue, COGS, Commissions, Capitalization and Amortization of Product Development, Stock Based Compensation, Taxes, etc.

● Prepare technical accounting memoranda including 606 and 842 memos

● Assure accounting compliance with lease rules

● Partner with Legal to ensure an administratively and cost-efficient entity structure

● Drive process improvements related to our general ledger, AR and AP functions, and treasury operations

● Lead our annual audit and preparation of financial statements

● Contribute to the implementation of our new ERP, Netsuite, and migration away from Dynamics GP

● Manage third-party relationships with auditors, technical advisors, and other partners

● Responsible for end-to-end systems data flows and operational processes, and design and documentation of related controls environments

● Partner with multiple internal organizations to drive policy, process, and systematic improvements including data collection and reporting streams across the organization

● Manage and actively seek to grow the capabilities of our internal and external accounting teams, including strategic planning of team expansion for future business growth

● Ensure compliance with state and federal tax and regulatory requirements

● Be a trusted advisor to the VP of Finance and CFO; proactively collaborate, influence, and align the company’s accounting policies with the overall company strategy


Requirements

● Big 4 or equivalent CPA firm experience with 10+ years combined accounting experience and at least 5 years of industry experience

● Certified Public Accountant

● Experience in both public and private company environments, preferably with high growth

● Experience with M&A and post-merger integration activities required

● Experience with SEC reporting, Sarbanes Oxley compliance, and Initial Public Offerings a plus

● Proven record of mentoring and developing teams

● Highly collaborative with a deep sense of ownership and accountability, willing to roll up sleeves and dive into the details and comfort with ambiguity and experimentation

● Prior experience with real estate or property management, payments or marketplaces, and Software/SaaS accounting and processes

● Experience in managing and consolidating the accounting for multiple subsidiaries and knowledge of intercompany transactions

● Experience with multi-location accounting and reporting

● Process oriented, have had experience in streamlining the close process

● Experience with NetSuite required, Dynamics GP, Salesforce, Dayforce and related systems preferred

● Manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining a high level of precision

● Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a strong focus on organization and formatting

● Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited university

● Ability to work with a low-ego, highly collaborative, cross-functional team


The anticipated base salary for this position is $170,000.00 to $220,000.00 annually. The actual base pay offered is determined by a number of variables, including, as appropriate, the applicant's qualifications for the position, years of relevant experience, distinctive skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location of residence and/or place of employment. Base pay is one component of Metropolis’s total compensation package, which may also include access to or eligibility for healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a lucrative stock option plan, bonus plans and more.
