Job Summary
Cleveland Clinic's Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute is currently seeking an experienced Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (Adult, Family or Women's Health certified) for an APRN PA Coordinator position with the Breast Services team. The coordinator will be responsible for managing the surgical and medical breast APP's. Some typical administrative duties include (but are not limited to: ARMs requests/vacations, Kronos, completing annual performance reviews for breast the team, arranging coverage for the team, recruitment/ onboarding of new hires, and quality improvement. The Coordinator will also function as an APRN/PA in collaboration with a physician. Some typical procedures will include: mastectomies, lumpectomies, breast abscess, as well as other various breast surgeries. The patient population will include Surgical Breast Patients (Outpatient and OR, no inpatient). The job would be structured as 60% clinical and 40% administrative (2 days of admin time a week-days dependent on Clinic/OR schedule). The hours for this position will be Monday through Friday days, with no weekends holidays or call at this time. Minimum of 1 year clinical experience is required with previous supervisory experience preferred. New graduates will not be considered for this position.

Oversees the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse/Physician Assistant function at the institution of practice. May assist administration with scheduling, and review of APRN/PA duties and responsible for ensuring appropriate utilization of APRN/PA's throughout the organization. Functions as an APRN/PA in collaboration with a Physician.

Job Details

Job Responsibilities:
  • Oversees APRN/PA's practice within the department/hospital/institute.
  • With the supervision of the Administration, assists with the hiring, orientation, reviewing, scheduling, supervising and training of APRN/PA's.
  • Schedules and assigns Advanced Practice Registered Nurses/Physician Assistants to maintain appropriate staffing and coverage.
  • Develops and implements competencies for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses/Physician Assistants (with assistance from the APRN/PA Directors).
  • Attends assigned meetings.
  • Communicates any new or updated information from Administration.
  • Conducts thorough medical histories, performs complete physical examinations based upon the age and patient history as per the Standard Care Arrangement with a collaborating physician.
  • Identifies significant health and medical risk factors.
  • Orders, interprets and evaluates laboratory test and other diagnostic studies to assess patient's clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Develops a diagnosis by analyzing and synthesizing collected data.
  • In collaboration with the physician, develops a treatment plan along with the patient and significant others.
  • Performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification, law and Cleveland Clinic privileges.
  • Prescribes and monitors medications as allowed by prescriptive authority through the applicable state Board of Nursing and CCF policy.
  • Educates patients regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards.
  • Performs routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, managing simple conditions produced by infection or trauma, assisting in the management of more complex illness and injury which may include assisting surgeons in conducting operations and taking initiative in performing evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations, as privileged by CCF Credentialing Board.
  • Performs specialized procedures as per delineation of privilege.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education:
  • PA: Graduate of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant Program.
  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies and/or applicable state licensure through the State Medical Board for certificate to practice.
  • APRN: Effective 05/01/2014: MSN required upon hire or within 5 years of hire for external hires and internal hires moving from a non-APRN licensed role to an APRN licensed role.
  • Applicable state licensed through the State Medical Board for certificate to practice.


Certifications:
  • APRN: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in applicable state.
  • National certification as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by nationally accredited organization recognized by state Board of Nursing, current licensure by applicable state Board of Nursing, (including certificate to prescribe if applicable).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) may be required based upon work setting.
  • PA: Current certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA (or successor).
  • Must have Prescriptive authority or eligible to apply for licensure to prescribe from the State Medical Board within the first 6 months of hiring.
  • Must have a Physician Supervision Agreement (listed on State Medical Board website) and/or signed addendum to Physician Supervision Agreement.
  • Must be privileged by CCF's Credentialing Board.
  • If candidate has held a license to prescribe within another jurisdiction and needs to obtain a Master's degree in order to apply for CT prescribe from applicable state, the candidate will be subject for review for eligibility for hiring within our system.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required based upon work setting.
  • Any registered nurse or advanced practice nurse must obtain a cancer specific certification or demonstrate ongoing qualifying education within the timeframe of the facilities accreditation cycle, if they work in medical oncology, radiation oncology, cancer center or cancer clinic and/or administer chemotherapy within an accredited Cleveland Clinic facility.


Competencies (Complexity of Work):
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competency and the ability to perform advanced assessment, diagnosis, treatment plan development, and invasive procedures as per clinical privileges.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all members of the Institute/department/hospital and other Cleveland Clinic employees at all levels.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers and data base programs.


Work Experience:
  • Minimum one year clinical experience with previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates superior knowledge and expertise in the area of specialization.


Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Requires extensive walking, sitting and stair climbing.
  • Manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination to perform physical examinations.
  • Requires normal or corrected vision and hearing to a normal range.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May require exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids


Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
