This position serves as Valmont's Corporate Director of Environmental Responsibility developing company strategy in driving continuous improvement with environmental and sustainability practices across the organization. This position directs the design and maintenance of organization-wide processes and tools that support Valmont's management systems and ensures alignment with overall business strategy (e.g., Environmental and Sustainability Playbooks, environmental management system (Intelex), and other business systems. The Corporate Director, Environmental Responsibility partners with all levels of management to analyze, design, improve and maintain Valmont's Environmental and Sustainability systems and to support the timely, efficient, and accurate delivery of services and information to key stakeholders worldwide. The incumbent collaborates with senior leaders and business units to integrate environmental best practices into daily operations throughout the organization. Additionally, this position will oversee environmental remediation programs for current and legacy operations, ensure resolution of regulatory matters, and support acquisition, due diligence and integration activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- This position reports into the VP, Global EHS with regional environmental managers as direct reports covering business operations.
- Supervises and manages the Environmental Responsibility and Sustainability Support Team (Green Teams).
- Develops Environmental Compliance strategies to address compliance and performance gaps in support of organization strategic plans.
- Leads the development and updates to Valmont's Environmental and Sustainability Playbooks which serve as Valmont's Global Environmental Management System.
- Drive the global Environmental Regulatory governance process including assurance, compliance initiatives and best practice exchanges.
- Manages high risk historical contamination, contingent liability and environmental due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures.
- Develops a robust third-party compliance auditing program is conducted annually.
- Ensures global sustainability metrics are collected, analyzed and published in support of Valmont's Sustainability Goals.
- Develops Global Sustainability goals and supporting GHG reduction initiatives consistent with Valmont's Sustainability and Climate White Papers.
- Supports the timely and accurate delivery of sustainability data and content for the publication of Valmont's Sustainability Report.
- Serves as thought leader is the area of climate and environmental management supporting Valmont's priority sustainable development goals.
- Responsible for ensuring the successful execution of Valmont's Green Fleet, Project 90/90, Core & Shell, water conservation and Green Ground Keeping Standards.
- Responsible for developing subsequent 2030 Global Sustainability Goals and supporting programs.
- Collaborate closely with Finance and Investor relations, legal, risk management, operations and commercial segments in the furthering of Valmont's Sustainability and Environmental Function.
- Oversee environmental remediation, resolution of regulatory matters, and support acquisition, due diligence and integration activities.
- Up to 30-35% domestic and overseas travel.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
- Bachelors with 15+ years relevant work experience.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressively increasing responsibility with an emphasis on environmental compliance, environmental remediation, sustainability and risk management and prevention.
- Track record of making effective decisions, even when dealing with limited or ambiguous information.
- Ability to lead and support corporate, division, business unit and site teams responsible for managing environmental risks.
- Prior proven experience utilizing an enterprise-wide Environmental-ESG information system/database.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
- Masters degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Geology, Sustainability or related discipline or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Experience with GRI, SASB, and ISO managements systems (14001, 50001, etc.) desired.
- Prior experience implementing and/or maintaining an enterprise-wide database system.
- Professional certifications preferred such as CHMM, PG, REM. etc.
Working Environment and Physical Efforts:
Work is typically performed in an office setting with regular visits to manufacturing facilities and locations. While visiting the manufacturing areas of the plant, use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is required at all times. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Domestic and international travel represents up to 30-35% of the work schedule and includes transportation by vehicle and by air. This position requires movement around the office and manufacturing facilities as well as the ability to drive a vehicle to and from the various locations including the occasional transportation of other team members. This position may require lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, pivoting, reaching, standing, climbing stairs, handling, gripping, grasping and visually inspecting equipment. Overall the physical effort level is considered light. Heavy equipment can be moved with a dolly or the aid of a hoist. Movement of heavy equipment is rare. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
