About the RoleCockroach Labs is seeking an experienced Corporate Controller to lead our Accounting functions. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will work to build and scale the Company’s financial operations by recruiting, developing and mentoring the Accounting team and designing and implementing best practices. They will be responsible for the development and implementation of the company’s control processes and accounting policies, maintaining the general ledger, leading the monthly close process, preparing monthly financial statements, managing tax, treasury, and leading international financial operations including transactions, tax, financial controls, & compliance.
We are looking for a professional who can help navigate our growth and eventual transition to a public company, while maintaining strict adherence to compliance regulations and championing financial best practices.
Cockroach Labs has a hybrid work model, with Roachers that are local to one of our offices coming in on Tuesdays and Thursdays and working flexibly the rest of the week. While we’ve learned valuable lessons working remotely, nothing can replace the connection, creativity, and fun that occurs when Roachers get together and we are committed to fostering a workplace that encourages collaboration and allows us all to do our best work.
For this role, you must be based near our New York or San Francisco offices or be willing to relocate and will be expected to come into the office two days a week.
You Will- Direct all aspects of accounting operations, including execution of operational accounting policy, general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, international accounting, revenue recognition under ASC606, and other accounting activities.
- Partner with General Counsel to develop the corporate structure and own international statutory reporting, audits and compliance requirements.
- Monitor, evaluate impact, and implement new accounting standards and regulatory requirements based on the evolution of the business.
- Own relationships with external auditors and global accounting and tax advisors, manage annual audits, handle all tax-related workstreams and the periodic 409a valuation refresh.
- Develop and coordinate relationships with banking institutions, manage treasury and collaborate with CFO in fundraising, in particular around debt financing.
- Collaborate with FP&A to analyze company's financial results with respect to profits, trends, costs.
- Partner cross-functionally to scale our company-wide systems and processes to achieve over time appropriate levels required of a public company.
- Manage the accounting system stack, including Netsuite, by constantly adding capabilities to improve our productivity, accuracy and controls.
- Evolve over time into a public company controller, eventually over-seeing SEC reporting, SOX compliance, and other areas.
- Manage, develop and mentor the accounting team members.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Accountancy, Finance, or related degree.
- CPA license required.
- 10+ years of related experience.
- Public accounting experience with a “Big 4” firm preferred.
- Experience as Assistant Controller or higher in a US public company and/or experience as Controller at a late stage private venture backed company.
- IPO readiness or public company experience.
- Experience with High growth, SaaS company; knowledge of usage based revenue model a plus.
- History of scaling and process improvement for finance and accounting operations.
- Strong technical accounting skills (US GAAP) with demonstrated ASC 606/revenue recognition and consolidation experience.
- Strong knowledge of non-GAAP industry metrics applicable to SaaS companies.
- Excellent knowledge and experience in assessing, developing, and implementing controls and systems, including NetSuite.
- Proven ability to hire, manage, and mentor high-performing teams; experience in leading a global accounting team with an international presence is a plus.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to effectively collaborate and drive initiatives cross-functionally.
Reporting to Lorenzo Montesi - Chief Financial Officer
Lorenzo is a seasoned professional with over a decade of experience leading finance, strategy, and operations for top technology companies. He loves to partner with technical teams and help them build companies that disrupt established markets. He was most recently the SVP of Finance at Cohesity, an enterprise data management company, where he led the finance, accounting and sales operations teams through multiple years of hyper-growth. Prior to joining Cohesity, Lorenzo held strategy and sales operations positions at VMware, RSA, and EMC, and earlier in his career, he was a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group. He lives in California with his wife and two teenage children and loves outdoor activities (cycling, skiing, and hiking).

The annual anticipated base salary range for U.S. candidates for this role is USD $200,000 to $275,000, plus commission if a sales role. We set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location.  Actual salaries may vary and fall outside of this range depending on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, geographic location, skills, experience, and competencies. In addition, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. Salary is one component of the Cockroach Labs’ total rewards package, which includes stock options, health insurance, life and disability insurance, funds towards professional development resources, flexible PTO, paid holidays, and parental leave, to name a few! Salaries for candidates outside the U.S. will vary based on local compensation structures.
