TheGrio, is a digital, video-centric news community devoted to giving voice to trusted figures on the front line who inspire us every day, and to fresh perspectives who buck convention because there's more than one way to be Black. We believe a well-informed community best determines its own interests. And so, TheGrio's editorial mandate is to focus on news and events which have a pronounced impact on a Black global audience. We unabashedly explore culture and entertainment, health and lifestyle, politics and policy, business and empowerment, science and climate, tech and innovation, and everything in between that matters to us. From Kampala to Atlanta TheGrio is Black culture amplified.

TheGrio is strongly building its editorial staff. It is an investment in the business's core competencies. These jobs will primarily be based in NY and Atlanta. Some of the positions will be opportunities to work from other cities or fully remote. JOB OVERVIEW

TheGrio is looking for a daily news writer with an emphasis on Black stories from across America. The ideal candidate will write 1-2 daily news stories, with a particular emphasis on breaking original stories. They also make sure the writing is easy to read and fits the editorial style of the platform. We are seeking a reliable self-starter to work alongside a shift-based team to manage stories that are accurate, authoritative, and indispensable.

This position can be based in Atlanta, New York, Washington D.C., or Los Angeles.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Write a daily stories with original reporting covering the Black experience domestically and globally
• Stay up to date on relevant trends, stories and experiences of Black people
• Coordinate story parameters with Managing Editor and Assignment Editor
• Strong knowledge of current events
• Research and craft stories in a way that resonates with our audiences
• Coordinate the licensing and creation of photography, graphics and videos
• Communicate critical story information with producers and managers
• Diligently maintains schedules and workflows
• Pitch daily story ideas

REQUIREMENTS

• Daily print and news reporting experience or the equivalent
• Knowledge and passion for the culture, history and current affairs
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently, be proactive and take initiative
• At least five years of digital or print reporting experience
• Solid news judgment and grasp of journalism best practices
• Detail-oriented
• Excellent writing skills, spelling and grammar
• Ability to work well with others under strict deadlines
• Maintains ethical journalism standards
• Works as a team player capable of clearly communicating with key stakeholders
• Has a firm understanding of rights and clearances
• Bachelor's degree required
