Job Description

At mySidewalk, our mission is to democratize data storytelling and equip Changemakers with tools to build stronger communities. Key Characteristics:

mySidewalk’s next Data Analyst will join the team that builds and maintains the mySidewalk data library. This person will work to  research data, build data pipelines, transform data, pair data to customer use cases, and communicate about data. The day-in, day-out work will be updating existing data and building new proprietary data. The role will also participate in the training of customers who buy mySidewalk data wholesale.

The kind of problems you’ll help us solve:

  • How might all the work we do contribute to the customer experience?

How you’ll solve those problems:
  • Data research and use cases
    • The role requires spending time researching various potential data sources and synthesizing the research into data recommendations
    • You get to work with subject matter experts and convert their knowledge into data work tickets
    • Bring your own knowledge and experience to suggest data sources that fill in gaps in the data library
  • Data pipelines, code, and metadata
    • You will write code (SQL, bash, python) to acquire, load, clean, and transform data
    • You will write metadata - citations, descriptions, and other pieces of information that describe the data
    • Actively seek out new techniques or technologies that you share with the team
  • Data usability
    • You will work collaboratively cross-team to connect customer use cases to the data sources
    • Our work is not limited to just building and updating data. You will also participate in internal projects to analyze things like data usage or query our products to inform the future roadmap.
    • Contribute to the team, department, and company roadmap

You’ll help us solve those problems if you:
  • Some prior experience in data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) along with exploratory data analysis (EDA)
  • Some exposure to programming languages such as SQL (postgreSQL, snowsql), bash, python, and/or R (or be willing to learn as part of the role)
  • Some exposure to programming tools such as terminal, jupyter notebooks, PyCharm, VSCode, SQL clients (e.g. pgAdmin, Postico), or be willing to learn as part of the role.
  • Basic level understanding and/or use of a github repository
  • Prior experience with or willingness to learn spatial data (GIS) basics, such as geocoding, georeferencing, and spatial joins.
  • Superior attention to detail, with strong organizational skills
  • Evangelist of data quality assurance (qa)
  • Willingness to communicate in detail about work in work tracking systems and daily check-in meetings
  • Willingness to participate and then eventually run meetings internally and externally to talk about data.
  • Desire to take ownership of tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines
  • Experience or exposure to data related to the public or private health sector, housing, community or economic development, or federal or local government is a plus.
