Data Center Operations Lead

The Systems team at Hudson River Trading (HRT) builds and maintains the computers, networks, data storage, operating systems, and software that allow our trading strategies to run worldwide 24/7. We are looking for an experienced Data Center Operations Lead who is comfortable on a command line, enjoys tinkering with hardware, and wants to optimize the performance of a large-scale data center. This is a highly impactful role where you will contribute to one of the world’s most sophisticated research computing environments on a daily basis. The ideal candidate is a jack-of-all-trades who can effectively multitask while retaining a high attention to detail to keep our systems running as efficiently as possible.

Responsibilities

• Provide strong leadership to a team of skilled data center engineers
• Oversee various projects related to data center operations, ensuring they are executed efficiently, meet deadlines, and align with overall business objectives
• Hardware and software installation and configuration
• Manage remote hardware maintenance activities
• Test and develop new hardware/software and tools
• Linux troubleshooting
• Networking layer maintenance and troubleshooting
• Collaborate closely with global colleagues, cross-functional teams, external partners, and vendors to ensure effective communication and alignment.

• 5+ years of practical experience working in an enterprise data center
• 2+ years of project management experience, preferably in a technical leadership role
• Understanding of data center infrastructure, networking protocols, power distribution, cooling systems, and environmental controls
• Experience with building PC/server hardware — you get a thrill out of assembling a computer from parts!
• Comfortable using Unix shells and Linux
• Python and shell scripting experience a plus 
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to closely collaborate with global colleagues and external partners 
• Ability to balance multiple priorities and projects
• Ability to manage time efficiently, working independently and as a team player
• Comfortable using hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, drills, etc.)
• Eager to learn and apply new skills quickly
• Education: Associate’s Degree or more in Information Technology
