JOB SUMMARY:
At Satcom Direct, we look for highly motivated, creative, and collaborative individuals who believe in making an impact. The data engineer position will report into our growing data science team and would be responsible for bringing automation to our models as well as any other necessary data pipelines. The right person for this role should not only have technical expertise, but also the ability to effectively communicate with other teams, including non-technical roles. Additionally, we are looking for someone that will bring insight and innovation to our team. This Position may be involved in research and development efforts for 95% of their time annually. Responsible for managing datasets alongside our architecture team, creating ETL pipelines, generating reports and models, creating visualizations, and delivering their insights in presentation form. Have a strong background in mathematics and statistics, a firm understanding of computer programming, and excellent communication skills. The Data Analyst will be expected to collaborate with our software developers, database architects, data engineers and data scientists on data initiatives and will ensure optimal data delivery architecture is consistent throughout ongoing projects. They must be self-directed and comfortable supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems, and products.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The requirements listed below are representative of the fundamental knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the job successfully:
- Processing confidential data and information according to guidelines.
- Helping develop reports and analysis.
- Managing and designing the reporting environment, including data sources, security, and metadata.
- Supporting initiatives for data integrity and normalization.
- Assessing tests and implementing new or upgraded software and assisting with strategic decisions on new systems.
- Data wrangling and ingestion from single or multiple systems.
- Troubleshooting the reporting database environment and reports.
- Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
- Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
- Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and AWS 'big data' technologies.
- Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader.
To be successful in this role, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner and should demonstrate all competencies listed above. GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related STEM field with minimum 3 years' experience in a similar role or Master's Degree with minimum 1 year experience in a similar role.
- Experience with relational SQL and NoSQL databases, such as SQL server, MariaDB, MongoDB, or Cassandra. Knowledge of Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, Hive/Impala, and/or Spark preferred.
- Experience with either Python or R. Python preferred with knowledge of numpy/scipy/pandas/sklearn considered a plus.
- Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Python, Java, C++, Scala, etc. merit extra attention.
- Work experience as a data scientist, data engineer, or in related field.
- Ability to work with stakeholders to assess potential risks.
- Ability to analyze existing tools and databases and provide software solution recommendations.
- Ability to translate business requirements into non-technical, lay terms.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing general office duties for this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and/or walk around (including the use of stairs). Other demands include the ability to openly communicate with others by talking, listening and reading, able to lift light objects (< 25lbs), and use standard office equipment such as computer, printer, phone and cell phone. In addition, there is an occasional need to bend, twist or stoop in order to open/close cabinets, reach for files or other standard office type objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The office environment is generally quiet and, in a temperature, controlled setting with random adjustments in noise or temperature due to others talking or laughing loudly, unscheduled maintenance repairs to the building or its interior offices or unpredictable situations due to weather or other acts beyond company control. An employee must be willing to work their regularly assigned work schedule for their particular duties and/or job responsibilities and in times of need, be able to work an extended schedule depending on company/department needs, project requirements or customer demands. Some overnight travel is required to facilitate work objectives. While at client site locations, if applicable, employee will be required to adhere to the proper safety precautions established by the client while in proximity to their work area, flight-line or maintenance repair center; work may require some physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes or equipment. The temperature at client locations can vary from controlled to variations off hot/cold when working, standing or walking in or near the flight-line or maintenance repair center.

In compliance with Colorado's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the salary range for this role in Colorado is $75,000-$105,000. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location. SD also offers a variety of benefits including: health and disability insurance, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, EAP, education assistance, parental leave, paid time off, and company-paid holidays. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire, experience level and location.
