 About Us

The New York Times' Data Platform mission is looking for inventive and motivated data engineers to join the newly created behavioral data team. You will build data pipelines, data models, applications and infrastructure for cloud platforms that ingest and serve hundreds of millions of records a day allowing for analysis, messaging and personalization for thousands of user audiences. 

Our team builds and supports an internal data platform for user data.  We're a team of Software Engineers, Data Engineers and Analysts responsible for full stack analytics engineering.  Our platform and products aim to capture, move, store, and transform raw data into highly actionable insights.  We support company-wide goals like growing our digital subscriber base, understanding how our customers use our products, and retaining our print subscribers.

The work location hybrid working model.

As an engineer on this team, you will

  • Create and maintain ELT data pipelines to support NYT analysts, marketers, advertisers and editors 
  • Contribute to a shared data platform by developing new capabilities using tech like BigQuery, dbt, Go, Python, Java, Airflow and Apache Beam 
  • Assemble large and complex datasets from various data sources into formats that can be effectively utilized by the business
  • Automate and optimize batch and streaming data transformation pipelines 
  • Implement data processing capabilities like user behavior models, metric aggregations, audience management and data science features
  • Develop highly governed data with clear definitions, manage it closely for quality and changes, and implement monitoring and alerting
  • Build reliable, scalable, maintainable, and cost-efficient data products on Google Cloud Platform 

Basic Requirements

  • 2 years of professional experience in Data Engineering
  • Proficient with SQL and some experience optimizing queries 
  • Proficiency with programming in at least one language (Go, Java or Python most preferred) 
  • Some experience building and running a batch ELT pipeline 

Preferred Requirements

  • Some experience on at least one distributed system such as NoSQL databases, stream processing systems or message brokers
  • Some professional experience with both Agile processes and DevOps best practices
  • Experience with the modern data stack (Fivetran / Snowflake / dbt / Looker / Hightouch or equivalents)
  • Experience with public cloud platforms like AWS, GCP or Azure
  • Familiarity with BI tools (e.g. Looker, Mode, Tableau) and experience sharing data insights via reports and dashboards

This role may require limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$104,000$130,000 USD
