The Risk Decision Technology (RDT) team at American Express is responsible for building software products/capabilities required to manage credit and fraud risk strategies globally. The group handles consumer journeys for Authorizations, Underwriting, and Hardship products for Credit Cards, Loans and Digital Banking. The group operates in Scale Agile methodology (Safe) and partners closely with the Credit and Fraud Teams. Risk strategy, Technology, Servicing and Marketing groups at American Express.
Responsibilities of this job:
This is an exciting opportunity for a technical professional with excellent knowledge of data-oriented capabilities and a track record of successful applications in the Financial Service Industry. As an Engineering Director, you will oversee
- The technology strategy and delivery of data inbound and outbound between analytical and operation data store.
- You will also be responsible for creating a migration strategy to move the analytical data store from private cloud to public cloud.
- Finally, re-design the Audit Logging Utility on the public cloud to flatten the data for rule validation
You and your team will:
- Evaluate enterprise offered solutions, conduct extensive proof of concepts and provide data-driven findings to explain functional and non-functional capabilities that address our availability, resiliency, latency, and consistency requirements.
- Participates in development of plans and strategies, practices, and standards related to data management processes, data products, data security and programs
- Functions as leading member of an agile team and runs data assets as per the enterprise standards, guidelines, and policies
- Lead design, development, troubleshooting, evaluating, modifying, deployment and documentation of all data components
- Debug data components, identify fixes, and validate / remediate design and/or performance defects
- Improve big data table design to follow data placement procedures and re-use of existing databases as appropriate
- Ensure proper data ingestion with zero loss
- Design the different data compute patterns at the time of ingestion
- Have strong written and verbal communication skills with a talent for precise articulation of testing status, problem management, and cross-functional alignment expectations.
- Communicate and works collaboratively with business and product teams to support changes and implementation
- Influence vendors to provide solutions and features to meet Amex needs
- Seek opportunities to embrace innovative technologies and maintain a strong rigor in the platform health and improvement
- Participate in coding (atleast 50%) and/or hands on technical implementation and debugging
- Ability to groom the engineers both in technical and leadership path
- Employ technical expertise to help team members overcome technical problems
- Analyze, design, program, debug, and modify software for use in local, networked, cloud-based or Internet-related environments
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in leading and delivering in matrixed organizations and interacting with teams across all lines of defense.
- 7+ years of experience in hands on engineering in data/distributed eco-system
- To be successful in this role you will need to be an expert in java, kafka, spark, big data (Hadoop/Hive). Knowledge in GCP is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities under pressure. Comfortably deal with fast pace, changing needs, and limited resources.
- Ability to see the big picture with attention given to critical details. Ability to balance between technology dictating the path forward and empowering products with speed and predictability.
- Strong problem-solving skills: technical aptitude, opiniated on details, understand the internal working of platforms, and drive the vision for the platform.
- Experience with variety of non-functional and functional testing practices dealing with massive scale of data, business logic, and low latency distributed engineering on modern cloud.
- Evolve roadmap and strategy, working with product teams, that embraces a holistic view of the business including identifying possible future business opportunities.
- Advanced degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline is preferred
- Experience with variety of non-functional and functional testing practices.
- Comfortably deals with fast pace, changing needs, and limited resources.
- The ability to set a high bar for the team and empower them to achieve better results

- Ability to share engineering domain expertise with architects and other specialists
- Ability to adapt solutions to meet the broader needs of the portfolio
- Develop and deliver impactful new technologies
- Takes part in reviews of own work and leads reviews of colleagues' work
- Has working knowledge of the range of tools used in the planning, analyzing, crafting, building, testing, configuring, and maintaining of assigned application(s)
- Able to participate in assigned team's software delivery methodology (Agile, Scrum, Agile XP, Test-Driven Development, Waterfall, etc.)
- Understands and has practical experience with infrastructure technologies and components like servers, jvms and networking concepts
- Application of industry practices, processes, and standards
- Identifies several ways to do things differently that will continuously improve the product
- Bachelor's Degree in computer science, computer science engineering, or related field required; advanced degree preferred

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
