What You'll Do
Amplify's Data Governance team is responsible for ensuring our data's quality, accuracy, security, and consistency through a mix of visibility and controls. We truly believe in a culture of data enablement and strive to empower our teams to achieve their objectives through the use of data. Our purpose is to encourage users to explore and be confident in the data, not put up gates to limit or restrict. We believe that data has the power to drive our business, improve the efficacy of our products, and, most importantly, change the lives of teachers and students - and to do that, the Data Governance team ensures the data is well-defined, discoverable, secure, and high quality.
- Leadership: Be a key leader in the data organization as a peer to other data engineering leaders focused on Data Platform / Ops, ELT, Data Science, and BI / Analytics
- Communication and Collaboration: Partner with data stakeholders across the organization to identify governance goals, break down invisible data barriers, and understand, catalog, and steward key data assets for the company to gain a comprehensive understanding of the data assets
- Delivery: Take responsibility for successful delivery by crafting quarterly OKRs and ensuring teams are adopting and utilizing governance polices, tools, and procedures
- Change Management: Develop and introduce policies, procedures, and self-service governance tools to help all functions meet their governance needs
- Strategy: Build and evolve Amplify's data governance program, planning ahead for the company and data's growth and change
- People Management: Provide technical leadership, career development, coaching, and mentoring for data engineers and analysts
Example Projects You Might Work On
- Developing Amplify's data governance strategy and governance model, focusing on standards and collaborative data stewardship
- Introducing a metadata management tool to help all of our teams gain insight into the journey of their data
- Collaborating with Amplify's InfoSec team to ensure we meet or exceed compliance for established and emerging student data privacy and security regulations (ex. data residency, data retention, etc)
- Form and lead a cross-functional Data Governance Steering Committee where initiatives/projects, policies, and open issues and risks are discussed and reviewed
Basic Requirements
- 7+ years of professional data / analytics engineering experience or in a data-intensive field
- 3+ years of experience leading a data governance or data management function
- Proven track record of implementing or advancing a data governance strategy and model at an enterprise level
- Familiarity with business intelligence and reporting tools
- Good communication skills in writing and conversation, especially with non-technical partners
- Drive to understand data and its relevance to our business and product decisions
Preferred Requirements
- Comfortable working with and implementing data governance, metadata management, and data quality tools (ex. Atlan, Metaphor, Colibra)
- Experience working with a cloud-based data warehousing and analytics stack (Airflow, dbt, Snowflake, AWS)
- Experience with tools we use every day:
- Storage: Snowflake, AWS Storage Services (S3, RDS, Glacier, DynamoDB)
- ETL/BI: Airflow, dbt, Matillion, Looker, Tableau
- Cloud Infrastructure: AWS Kinesis, Lambda, API Gateway, Terraform
- Experienced and knowledgeable with development languages like SQL, Python, R
- Understanding of ETL/ELT pipelines and Data Warehousing design, tooling, and support
- Experience with tools we don't use, but should
- Proven passion and talent for teaching fellow engineers and non-engineers
- Experience in education, ed-tech, or other fields with significant privacy, security, and compliance requirements
What we offer:
Salary is only one component of the Amplify Total Rewards package, which includes a lucrative 401(k) plan, incentive stock options, competitive health insurance and mental health options, basic life insurance, paid time off, parental leave, and access to best-in-class development programs. The gross salary range for this role is $140,000 - $160,000. This role is eligible to receive an annual discretionary bonus that rewards individual and company performance.
