Job Description

The Data Scientist will develop and implement analytics capabilities across the organization. This position will analyze medical and pharmacy claims and related data to uncover insight into physician performance and risk factors. This work will have a direct impact on critical functions across the organization including insurance underwriting, risk management, and actuarial. This position will also play a key role in developing customer facing analytics capabilities across the value-based care (VBC) and medical liability insurance lines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform data extraction, cleaning, transformation, and analysis using tools such as Python, SQL, SAS, and DataRobot.
  • Apply statistical and machine learning techniques to build predictive models, perform hypothesis testing, and generate insights from medical claims, pharmacy claims, and other related datasets.
  • Perform model validation to compare lift, accuracy, reliability, and stability of models, and determine best models for deployment.
  • Develop metrics to understand physician and facility performance and practice patterns, and use those metrics to model insurance risk.
  • Build visualizations using PowerBI and related tools to synthesize data and insights for a variety of internal stakeholders as well as insureds.
  • Collaborate with the VBC Analytics team and stakeholders across the company to identify and execute on opportunities to use medical claims and pharmacy claims to create value for the business.
  • Maintain a pulse on the latest developments in data science and the insurance industry and apply such learning to work at Coverys.

Education, Experience, Competencies & Values

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, health economics, or related quantitative fields of study.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a data scientist or analyst.
  • Proficiency programming in Python, SAS, SQL, and related languages.
  • Demonstrated skill in statistical analysis, machine learning technology, and big data.
  • Working experience with visualization platforms such as PowerBI.
  • Experience working with database systems such as Snowflake, DataBricks, and/or MS SQL Server and performing ETL operations is a plus.
  • Knowledge of healthcare claims (CPT, HCPCS, ICD codes) and the insurance industry is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to collaborate across functional teams to meet a common goal.
  • Ability to understand and define problems and to proactively execute a plan to find answers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Curious mindset and a desire to dive into complex problems and challenge oneself is a must.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Salary Range is $ 93,000-$126,000. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate including location, skill set, experience, qualifications and education.
