Job Description
The Database Engineer is responsible for the highest-level aspects of engineering, design, configuration, implementation, management, and support of enterprise database platforms at the Steward Health Care Data Center and Hospital Facilities that comprise Steward Health Care.
This role requires advanced knowledge of database platforms and information management. The position will lead with the ongoing evolution and modernization of database technology for highly scalable, highly available with logical and geographical redundancy, cost effective database solutions with capacity on demand.
The qualified candidate will have a good mix of technical and project management skills
The Database Engineer will work closely with the business intelligence, application systems support and their vendor partners, systems engineering, storage engineering and datacenter management teams, local Network and Operations Supervisors, Operations Staff, and other managers within the system.
The Database Engineer must be able to communicate and collaborate with all engineers and technicians as well as managers and directors within Steward Health Care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Make proactive recommendations for improvements to our database platforms, provide insight on the requirements and components, and articulate the benefits of proposed solutions
- Monitor database health and take corrective actions for aspects of the platform to avoid performance and capacity issues before they occur
- Install and configure new Microsoft SQL Servers
- Work with system stakeholders, department managers and application vendors to determine proper platform specifications, gather pricing and ordering information.
- Provide technical guidance and recommendations to other members of Steward IS Department and staff involved in system deployment as pertaining to present or proposed business procedures or problems to define data storage needs.
- Deploy database change scripts provided by third party vendors
- As new systems are brought in-house, choose whether to use clustering, log shipping, mirroring, Windows Azure, or other technologies
- Configure SQL Server monitoring utilities to minimize false alarms
- Troubleshoot MSSQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends
- Migrate/upgrade databases from legacy Microsoft SQL servers to newer Microsoft SQL environments
- When performance issues arise, determine the most effective way to increase performance including hardware purchases, server configuration changes, or index/query changes
- Ensure all database servers are backed up in a way that meets the business's Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
- Test backups to ensure we can meet the business' Recovery Time Objectives (RTO)
- Document the company's database environment and maintain accurate inventory information about our databases
- Develops and maintains documentation detailing vendor service and support contracts, detailed flow charts and diagrams outlining systems capabilities and processes pertaining to database platforms.
- Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
- Evaluates and implements new technologies for enhancement of database performance, management, and security, and recommends their use where appropriate.
- Performs regular on-call duties as scheduled and miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
MUST HAVE (Required):
- Minimum 5 years' experience as Microsoft SQL database administrator
- Experience with database migration and performance tuning and analysis
- Good analytical skills to troubleshoot problems that arise in an enterprise class database environment with clusters and standalone servers located across multiple geographic locations.
SHOULD HAVE (Desired):
- Strong background in Windows and Linux operating systems
- Experience with enterprise database management solutions: Idera Tool suite
- Knowledge and/or experience working with other database platforms including Oracle and MySQL
GOOD TO HAVE (Admired):
- Experience in a healthcare enterprise environment, including healthcare applications such as MEDITECH and eClinicalWorks, Mckesson PACS.
- Experience working with reporting tools like Qlikview

- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret applicable technical documentation, system reports, software licenses and contracts.
- Ability to plan, implement, test, and troubleshoot system software.
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
- Ability to determine database problems and to coordinate hardware and/or software solutions.
- Ability to document work in progress.
- Knowledge of a broad range of relevant multi-user computer systems, applications, and/or equipment.
- Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of computer security procedures and protocol.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER
- Education: Four-year college or university program certificate preferred.
- Experience (Type & Length)Five years' systems experience in an enterprise computing environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification/Licensure: Preferred industry certifications related to Microsoft database platforms.
- Software/Hardware:In-depth knowledge of Microsoft SQL platforms required.
- Other:Ability to design and implement database systems utilizing current industry technology.
