Database Architect

Fivetran is building data pipelines to power the modern data stack for thousands of companies. We’re looking for a seasoned Database Architect to join our Platform Engineering group. This group is responsible for building a highly available, reliable, and scalable application/infrastructure platform running over 2 million data pipeline jobs every day across 3 major public clouds GCP, AWS and Azure.  

In this role, you will own and drive the database architecture and strategy for the Fivetran platform ensuring its performance, scalability, availability, and reliability. You will guide developers and site reliability engineers in implementing and operationalizing them. You will also be part of our architecture council, working closely with engineers/architects from other global engineering groups and the CTO office, driving the vision/roadmap for the database architecture which aligns with the overall platform architecture to meet our 10x growth in the next few years. 

You will be a great fit for this role if you have architected and designed multi-tenant databases using different isolation strategies for enterprise SaaS applications that can scale horizontally with no single point of failure. You frown upon seeing slow queries in production and find ways to optimize them. You have in-depth know-how of running PostgreSQL databases at scale. This is a full-time position based out of our Oakland office or remote within the US/Canada.

• Own and drive the database architecture, vision, strategy, and roadmap to meet our continuous growth.
• Own the entire database schema/data modeling and its design with the deep understanding of technical/business requirements.
• Conduct continuous server/query performance analysis, and provide guidance for database server/application performance tuning.
• Identify new data workloads early in the software development lifecycle, and collaborate with the developers on schema/query design, impact analysis, optimization, and migration planning.
• Design highly available & horizontally scalable database cluster architecture with the support for seamless failover during large-scale disruptions and database upgrades/migration with no downtime.
• Establish and implement database best practices, design/review guidelines, and processes.
• Establish migration procedures and capacity planning to enable high confidence deployments.
• Mentor and influence engineering teams in optimal schema design and writing high performant queries.
• Design a connection pooling strategy and guide engineering teams in implementing them.
• Design and develop a performance testing strategy to test changes before going into the production database.
• Design and implement the ELT/ETL strategy for our production data analytics.

• 10+ years of experience in designing and developing enterprise database architecture that has supported large scale, high volume, and high availability transactional SaaS applications
• Subject matter expert in PostgreSQL with 5+ years of production experience in supporting at scale, highly available, and performant databases
• Strong relational data modeling and SQL skills
• Demonstrated expert ability in performance testing/monitoring/optimization and tuning database server configurations, queries, partitions/shards, and indexes
• Experience working with cloud database technologies such as AWS RDS, GCP CloudSQL
• Strong communication skills with a high degree of comfort speaking with developers, architects, leadership, and the ability to gain alignment
• Knowledge of Java programming or any JVM based language is preferred
