Job Description and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Benefits Finance, the Principal Specialist, Benefits Finance plays a critical role in the Benefits Finance department within Corporate Accounting, which is based in Waltham, MA or Farmington, CT working as a hybrid in-person/remote team. The Benefits Finance department oversees the financial accounting, reporting, funding, and forecasting aspects of the Company's benefits offerings, including active and post-retirement medical, dental, life insurance, disability, and pension benefit programs. The Principal Specialist will be responsible for various items including but not limited to:
  • Developing financial forecasts and analysis of Company benefit costs related to fringe benefit programs, including pension.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the Company's and the benefit plans' financial statement disclosures, annual filings, and submissions to the US government.
  • Participating in ad hoc special projects, as needed, including plan design analysis, process improvement initiatives, and mergers/acquisitions due diligence.
  • Working with a variety of third-party benefits vendors and internal contacts to ensure the payment of, and accounting for, benefit claims, expenses, and other financial transactions is in accordance with company policies.
  • Participating in audit support activities, which may include leading calls with auditors, preparing written responses to audit inquiries, review of vendor SOC1 reports, and testing of applicable controls, among other items.

Required Skills:
  • Minimum 5 years related experience with DB pension actuarial and/or accounting concepts
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to independently manage critical projects under demanding schedules
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to multi-task with attention to detail
  • Solid written and communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office tools especially Excel as well as PowerPoint and Word

Desired Skills:
  • Knowledge of GAAP, ERISA and CAS regulations with respect to pensions and other benefits
  • Actuarial or accounting certification
  • Ability to help identify and execute process improvements

Education and Experience
  • This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Math, Actuarial Science, Finance, Accounting, or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience in an applicable field.
