About Democracy Restated: 

Democracy Restated aims to help us come together by improving the partnership between the nation and the states. This partnership is in serious need of reform. Our goal is to draft a constitutional amendment with broad bipartisan support that will put the nation-state partnership on a footing of mutual respect and equality.

Key Goals:

1. Improve the Nation-State Partnership in Lawmaking: Too often, the federal government coerces the states on local issues. This needs to end -- partners should use persuasion, not coercion. Moreover, the federal government sometimes lacks clear authority to act on national issues, because the list of national issues in the Constitution was written in the 1780s. This list needs to be updated, so the nation can fulfill its role of handling all important national issues.
2. Improve the Nation-State Partnership in Amending the Constitution: The states have the upper hand in amending the Constitution. They have a lot of power in proposing amendments because of the Senate, and they have all of the power in ratifying amendments because each state gets one vote and the nation as a whole has no vote. This made sense in the 1780s, when the original thirteen states were wary of the new national government, but no longer makes sense. It is time to have an equal partnership between the nation and the states in amending the Constitution. We also should make it somewhat easier to amend the Constitution. In our vast and diverse country, the steep three-fourths requirement to ratify the Constitution has put the amendment process largely out of reach.
3. Build a Bipartisan Consensus: Our approach is based on deep American principles that belong to all of us. We will work with both major parties to realize our goals.
4. Combine Expertise with Political Savvy: We have already assembled a small group of experts in constitutional law and political science to define promising approaches to reforming the nation-state partnership. Next, we will assemble an informal convention of politically connected delegates from all fifty states to debate the expert’s proposals and come up with a single draft constitutional amendment with broad bipartisan support.

About the Position:

The Chief of Strategy and Political Outreach (CSPO) plays a critical role in Democracy Restated, a new nonpartisan political organization focused on improving the partnership between the nation and the states. The CSPO leads political outreach to the legislatures, governors’ offices, and political parties of all fifty states, with the goal of selling them on our ideas and getting them to nominate delegates to our convention.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Implementation

• Lead the development of the organization’s political outreach strategy.
• Continuously evaluate and adapt strategies to address emerging challenges and opportunities.

Political Outreach

• Engage with political actors, primarily at the state level, to build awareness of and support for the organization’s mission to hold an informal convention in 2025.
• Convince political actors from both parties, in all states, to nominate delegates to the informal convention.
• Collaborate with bipartisan organizations and advocacy groups in support of our mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in political science, communication, public relations, or a related field.
• Proven experience in strategic communication, political outreach, and government relations within the political or nonprofit sector.
• In-depth knowledge of state political processes, public policy issues, and political landscapes.
• Demonstrated success in building bipartisan relationships and fostering bipartisan support.
• Familiarity with the amendment process and constitutional reform initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of strategic communication techniques, media relations, public relations strategies, and the political landscape.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Strategic thinking and analytical abilities, with the capacity to develop and implement effective strategies.
