Job Description

About Democracy Re-Stated:

Democracy Re-Stated aims to help us come together as a nation to address national issues, while also strengthening the states’ power over local issues. We believe an updated balance between the nation and the states can make our government more effective and accountable. Our goal is to draft a constitutional amendment with broad bipartisan support that will reform our system of federalism.

Key Goals:

  1. Improve the Division of Powers: The promise of federalism is that a diverse population can cooperate at the national level while expressing our differences at the state and local levels. This promise is not being fully met, because the federal government too often coerces the states on local issues, and because, paradoxically, the federal government sometimes lacks clear authorization to tackle national issues. By focusing each level of government on what it can do best, we aim to make all governments more effective and accountable.
  2. Revitalize the Amendment Process: We want to give the nation as a whole a voice in the ultimate power in our system: the power to ratify amendments to the Constitution. Currently, that power belongs entirely to the states, with one vote per state. We believe the nation as a whole also needs a voice in this process, just as laws are made not by the Senate alone but in partnership with the House. And by thus broadening the basis for ratification, we can lower the threshold down from the current requirement of three-fourths.
  3. Build a Bipartisan Consensus: Our approach is based on deep principles of federalism that belong to all of us. We will work with both major parties, with a focus on the states, to realize our goals.
  4. Combine Expertise with Political Savvy: We will first assemble a small group of experts in constitutional law and political science to define promising approaches to reforming federalism, along the lines of sections 1 and 2 above. Next, we will assemble an informal convention of politically connected delegates from all fifty states to debate the expert’s proposals and come up with a single constitutional amendment with broad bipartisan support.

About the Position:

The Chief of Strategy and Political Outreach (CSPO) plays a critical role in Democracy Re-Stated, a new nonpartisan political organization focused on federalism and advancing constitutional change. The CSPO leads political outreach to the legislatures, governors’ offices, and political parties of all fifty states, with the goal of educating them about our ideas and getting them to nominate delegates to our convention.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Implementation

  • Lead the development of the organization’s political outreach strategy.
  • Continuously evaluate and adapt strategies to address emerging challenges and opportunities.

Political Outreach

  • Engage with political actors, primarily at the state level, to build awareness of and support for the organization’s mission to hold an informal convention in 2025.
  • Convince political actors from both parties, in all states, to nominate delegates to the informal convention.
  • Collaborate with bipartisan organizations and advocacy groups in support of our mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, communication, public relations, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in strategic communication, political outreach, and government relations within the political or nonprofit sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of state political processes, public policy issues, and political landscapes.
  • Demonstrated success in building bipartisan relationships and fostering bipartisan support.
  • Familiarity with the amendment process and constitutional reform initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of strategic communication techniques, media relations, public relations strategies, and the political landscape.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strategic thinking and analytical abilities, with the capacity to develop and implement effective strategies.

Join Democracy Re-Stated in our mission to redefine the relationship between the nation and the states, bridge partisan divides, and reinvigorate our republic.
