POSITION SUMMARY

Advanced level technical position with window and curtain wall experience and design skills with the ability to support a project from inception to installation while interacting with designers, structural engineers, project managers, internal sales, and external customers. Involved with optimizing product design, die design, estimating support, product selection, along with mentoring designers. Ensure clear communication through drawings, sketches, emails, phone conversations, and in-person meetings. Ability to design from standard, modified standard, or custom profile extrusions or products.

POSITION DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following:

• Review project specifications and architectural plans for use in window and wall system selection, developing proposal drawings, and other information as needed to support sales and estimating in procurement of projects.
• System design optimization that meets the specifications, design intent, and cost targets.
• Lead the design-assist process on projects that require it by following internal SOP and related documents to this process.
• Design special application drawings for hardware, extrusions, gaskets, fasteners, and other parts.
• Develop submission detailing of non-standard applications.
• Provide direction and technical assistance to designers during preparation of submission and production drawings to ensure system design is appropriate for air & water performance, manufacturability, and means of installation.
• Review outsourced submission drawings for air & water performance, manufacturability, and means of installation.
• Provide technical support to other departments and customers including preliminary details, product selection, specification review, and testing plans.
• Understand the manufacturing process and utilize input in design for ease of manufacturing and installation.
• Interpret and explain thermal models.
• Assist Project Managers with technical content of RFI's to help in obtaining information.
• Troubleshoot and participate in correction of product-related problems in manufacturing.
• Assist in installation and testing of mockups, at test lab or jobsite, along with the aptitude to diagnose and trouble shoot issues during mock-up testing.
• Communicate with vendors regarding extrusion design and manufacturability.
• Responsible for designing, checking, and approving extrusion die drawings.
• Travel may be required to meet with necessary parties to secure information, approval, field measuring, coordination, or address issues that may arise on projects.
• Participate in design review meetings with the intent of producing drawings with cost effective design solutions for manufacturing and engineering processes.
• Mentor and train associates by answering questions and providing guidance.
• Actively promote high quality in your daily responsibilities.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Design Engineer candidates should have at least an associate's degree in design engineering, manufacturing engineering, product design engineering technology or other related fields. Minimum 5 years of experience related to commercial curtainwall or window products.

SKILL and KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

• Proficient in the use and interpretation of architectural plans and specifications, along with other contract documents.
• Proficient in the use of Wausau Intranet to retrieve product and process related information to perform job related duties.
• Three-dimensional visualization ability.
• Market savvy, sense of urgency, salesmanship, professionalism, and presentation skills.
• Able to identify cost savings in design, that increase profitability of a project. Value engineering knowledge critical.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence and to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
• Communication Skills - verbal/written/graphical.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work in a team-based environment, collaborating with others.
• Close attention to detail.
• Design capabilities, technical product troubleshooting, and data analysis.
• Knowledge of Window and Wall Systems product lines, manufacturing processes, and engineering process (submission and production).
• Willing and able to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines.

Computer software proficiency in the following software:

• AutoCAD
• Understanding of a Bill of Materials
• Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and One Note
• ERP Software - Epicor
• Bluebeam
• WebEx
• Wausau Web Tools

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibility.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Mostly an office environment with occasional visits to the manufacturing floor. The noise levels in the work environment are usually moderate.

Available for moderate amount of travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, bend and move about the facility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
