As a Design Engineer I you will be responsible for creating designs and executing specific design phases of new product development, product redesigns or a complete design project as assigned, including providing direction of technicians, completing documentation, designing for cost improvement (DCI), ensuring product quality improvement (PQI), legacy product maintenance, and coordinating necessary activities with other departments and outside suppliers.

What Will You Do?
  • Conceptualize and create designs to satisfy the product objectives related to the specific areas assigned, utilizing 3D CAD software to do project-related work.
  • Assure the design specifications of the assigned area to meet the overall approved specifications, including cost, timing and performance objectives of the product.
  • Manage projects with internal cross-functional teams assigned to product programs, and domestic and international vendors.
  • Prepare sketches, layouts, drawings, and analysis for assigned tasks.
  • Research and propose materials and processes to be used in designs.
  • Ensure designs meet the durability, performance, manufacturability, and quality criteria of the company plus Toro and industry safety standards.
  • Analyzes proposed engineering designs using calculations, testing, computer methods or other techniques as needed.
  • Procures and coordinates the efforts of outside consultants, labs, suppliers, etc. needed to accomplish the design or other objectives of the project.
  • Works with Legal on potential patent activities and liability avoidance.
  • Conduct feasibility studies to reveal idea practicality and potential design or program issues.
  • Organize the work of the drafters, model makers, technicians, and outside vendors.
  • Perform continuous improvement activities such as (DCI), (PQI), and Engineering Change Management
  • Develop and execute releases, parts lists, assembly drawings, and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Work with assembly plants and vendors to maintain production.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Do You Need?
  • Bachelor's degree in an ABET accredited Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering program or Master's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Agricultural engineering from a university with an ABET accredited undergraduate engineering program
  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years' of experience in design engineer field.
  • Experience with advanced battery technologies, smart connected products, robotics, automation, control systems, electric motors and related regulatory/safety conformance is highly preferred
  • Proficient with design software such as CAD, ProE, Windchill, CREO mechanism, and drafting
  • Ability to transfer skills and knowledge from past experience and related technologies to new situations.
  • Technical ability in math and mechanics preferable.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently accomplish duties and responsibilities as listed.
  • Collaborative team player with ability to communicate and work effectively across levels and departments, where flexibility, adaptability, and resiliency are important
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Proven relationship building skills, ability to gain and build support for design initiatives
  • Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office applications required, SAP or other ERP systems experience preferred
  • Travel: Domestic and international travel of up to 15% to test-sites, distributors, customers, vendors, manufacturing facilities, global partners and others as required
