This is a Hybrid Onsite/Remote role that is based in Bloomington, MN Metro.

JOB TITLE: Design Engineer II

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Engineering Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Engineering

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR:

The Design Engineer II (DE2) position is responsible for design and development projects for QBP's proprietary brands and both brand and general R&D activities specific to product development. The DE2 is an integral part of the project working team where project direction is provided by Product Management and projects are assigned by the Engineering Supervisor.

DE2s will be supervised by either an Engineering Supervisor or an Engineering Manager. The normal career progression for a DE2 is Design Engineer III (DE3). In case of a conflict in due dates, the DE2 attempts to resolve the conflict by working with the involved design teams and involving their supervisor as needed.

  • Product Development. 35%

    • Assist in ideation and provide feedback on the development of product briefs and use cases during the pre-kickoff phases of a project
    • Participate in design and technical reviews for work completed by other Design Engineers, providing meaningful feedback and guidance based on experience
    • Complete market research to monitor industry trends, new technologies, and rider preferences; and share these results with the team
    • Work directly with vendors and supply chain to ensure effective, sustainable manufacturing methods; and look for opportunities to improve costs
    • Use SolidWorks to create engineering CAD (models, drawings), and file these drawings appropriately in the engineering PDM system
    • Develop awareness of our industry and pay attention to emerging trends and market directions
    • Use the 3D printers and other methodologies to create rapid prototypes in support of product and R&D projects
    • Complete development testing as necessary to support assigned projects
    • Evaluate new products through assembly, ride, and lab testing
    • Hold regular technical reviews on projects and incorporate feedback into designs as appropriate
  • Product Safety and Quality Assurance. 15%

    • Lead the creation of appropriate qualification and performance requirements for product release, and seek approval for these recommendations from Product Safety and Test Engineering
    • Consult with QC and Compliance/Product Safety groups during the creation of new QC and Safety Standards and Procedures
    • Maintain relationships with domestic and international supplier-partners through excellent communication
    • Direct interns on projects as assigned by the intern supervisor
    • Evaluate products to determine the overall risk profile and prioritize any necessary risk mitigation
    • Develop tolerance schemes and inspection processes to control the quality of products during production
    • Test, qualify, and document within the applicable government regulations and standards
    • Determine necessary qualification and testing measures during iterative product changes
    • Review any anomalous QC or Batch Test data and recommend appropriate responses to the product team
  • Product Support. 15%

    • Provide feedback when requested by QC or Test Engineering on warranty patterns and analyze field returns as requested
    • Provide engineering support for design projects associated with QBP recalls
    • Provide technical input to marketing for the creation of content including (e.g.) instructions, product technical information, concept renderings, or blogs
    • Be a technical resource for Customer Service Agents for proprietary products
    • Represent the brand and QBP's Core Values at events, tradeshows, etc.
    • Monitor and review warranty claims to identify systemic problems, as well as provide technical support to the Customer Service Agents
  • Research and Development. 20%

    • Lead engineering efforts on R&D projects
    • Complete development projects to prove R&D technologies prior to implementation
    • Participate in the ideation and proposal of R&D projects with consideration for future needs for their assigned brand(s)
  • Department Development. 10%

    • Act as a mentor/coach for a DE 1 as needed and as department position balance allows
    • Participate in training and act as a resource for the professional development of DE1s
    • Take on additional responsibility in the team in supporting one or more tools (e.g. PDD Shop, 3d Printers, Supply Cabinet, Product Library, Calculation Tools, etc.)
    • Provide feedback and participate in conversations around departmental standards, tools, and best practices as needed
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned. 5%

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ABET-accredited Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in consumer products
  • Strong mechanical creativity
  • Ability to balance competing deadlines and projects with general prioritization set by supervisor
  • Ability to thrive in an international work environment and overcome language barriers
  • Strong desire for feedback and collaboration on designs and concepts
  • Ability and willingness to learn cycling skills to test products
  • Willingness to work outdoors while performing product testing in a variety of conditions including wet and cold

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with bicycle engineering
  • Bicycling enthusiast
  • Experience with CAE Analysis, especially SolidWorks Simulation
  • Experience with carbon composite design and manufacturing
  • Experience with PLM or PDM systems, especially SolidWorks PDM or Enovia
  • Experience with phase-gate release process involving cross-functional departments
  • Strong CAD skillset including BOMs, complex surfacing, and weldment assemblies
  • Experience with ISO qualifications standards, especially ISO 4210
  • Familiarity with welding, metal forming, machining, assembly, and/or heat treatment processes from either a shop-tech or engineering perspective
  • Ability to bring a diverse skill set and perspective to our team
  • Willingness to take initiative and work effectively without close supervision in the rapidly evolving climate of a consumer-facing product. Work effectively and respond positively to changing priorities and remain adaptable and flexible under the pressures of deadlines and change
  • Familiarity with Chinese, Taiwanese, and/or Vietnamese business culture and customs

OTHER RELATED CRITERIA

  • Domestic and International Travel

    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 5 times per year, including flying by plane and driving a motor vehicle. Must possess a valid US Passport and driver's license and fulfill the requirements of being a QBP Approved Driver.
