A Brief Summary of This Position:

Valmont is currently seeking an Design Engineering Intern to support our Lighting & Traffic engineering team with key initiatives and process improvements. You will learn a tremendous amount in this role, including design code and parameters impacting the sizing of lighting and traffic structures, and will work alongside subject matter experts in the field.

This position is targeted to start at the beginning of summer.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop routine structural design calculations for steel traffic, lighting and flag poles utilizing the AASHTO, AISC, IBC and ASCE 7 codes
  • Actively improve the design process by identifying and implementing process improvement
  • Present process improvement recommendations and initiatives to Sr. Engineers and other affected groups
  • Improve documentation and organization of Engineering designs and specifications
  • Engage with manufacturing to improve knowledge of the final design
  • Update engineering documents with changes in specifications, processes and procedures, and design manuals
  • Troubleshoot potential design errors and provide resolution recommendations

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Currently enrolled in an ABET accredited bachelor's or master's engineering degree program (Civil or Structural preferred)
  • Minimum GPA 3.00
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Successful completion of entry level courses in structural analysis such as statics, linear structural analysis, Steel 1, and other relevant courses

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with application or design engineering
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Inventor or other 3D modeling software
  • Previous experience using Excel to set up calculations
  • Technical communication experience
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Passion and integrity with a drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an office setting. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. No travel requirements for this position. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds in working with large files, binders, and computer equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Minimum base pay of $21.00 per hour and maximum of $26.00 per hour.
