As the Designer - Fixtures, you will create, develop and implement design, or portions of a design, for Product Evaluation test fixtures or lab facilities improvements. Provide and follow through on drawings submitted to PDL or outside sources for procurement and assist in assembly where required.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for:

  • Create designs and design layouts for fixtures used in the evaluation of subsystems and complete products as well as improvements to lab facilities with respect to test fixtures.
  • Ensure fixture designs meet safety and quality requirements of the Product Evaluation Department.
  • Responsible for basic design calculations such as gear pulley ratios, MPH, rpm's, weight distribution, and lever arms.
  • Secure assistance of consultants or internal specialists to support design calculations, manufacturability, and overall fixture design, where required. (e.g., simulation support, manufacturing engineers, and vendor experts).
  • Procure parts needed for fixtures from internal and external vendors with large dollar spending approval from Product Evaluation Manager.
  • Conduct team design reviews with Test Engineers, Design Engineers and Designers when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate lists of parts created. Coordinate, or assist in the coordination, of the drafting and manufacture of parts, either internally or externally. Be able to capture costs and roll-up into final product cost for purchased parts.
  • Inform requestors of fixture status and issues that may require assistance.
  • Assist in the assembly of the fixture where needed.
  • Attend internal or external training classes to stay abreast of new design, drafting, and material developments.
  • Assist Department Manager with defining and writing capital requests needed for lab fixture development or improvements.

What Do You Need?

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:

Level II

  • Graduate of an accredited technical school for design and drafting (two-year course) or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited university or college in an engineering related technology (ex. Automotive, Manufacturing, Design, Electrical, Mechanical.)
  • Two to four years of related work experience (three years if candidate has B.S. in Engineering) in the mechanical drafting field.
  • Demonstrates the ability to identify and sort out relevant information.
  • Demonstrated efficiency in applying software development skills to problem solving.
  • Technical ability in math and mechanics preferable.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently accomplish duties and responsibilities as listed.

Level III

  • Graduate of accredited technical school for machine design and drafting (two-year course) or Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering related technology (ex. Automotive, Manufacturing, Design, Mechanical, Electrical)
  • Four to seven years of related experience (five years if candidate has B.S. degree as listed above)
  • Previous data management experience required (e.g., PDMLink)
  • Proficiency in Creo/PTC product is required
  • Proficiency in MS Office Applications is required
  • Able to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple work requests, in different stages of design or manufacture.
  • Proven experience partnering with cross-functional teams to achieve results.

Other Job-Related Components:

  • Provide physical and technical support to TTC Engineering Departments.
  • Interface with Test Engineers, Test Technicians, Vendors, Design Engineers, Designers, Drafters, and PDL personnel (Specialists - Journeyworker and Apprentices, CNC - Machinist Journeyworkers and Sheetmetal Specialists) and Management.

It is not common to be hired at or near the top of the range; compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
