Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit organization committed to creative expression. Housed in a purpose-built-facility in Brooklyn, the organization hosts an extended network of art and fabrication professionals and educators who work together to co-create and share artistic practices vital to the well being of artists and the communities to which they serve. Our new home houses fabrication services, production services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans.Â
Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit established to create a robust platform for art production and employment in the arts. Powerhouse Arts’ programming includes education, employment opportunities, and public engagement to increase access and opportunity for participation in the arts for all New Yorkers. For the past six years, Powerhouse has been stewarding the redevelopment of the former Brooklyn Rapid Transit Power Station in Gowanus. We have recently relocated to our permanent home which houses fabrication services, production spaces, and member workshops for artisans. We are hiring for key staff roles as we prepare to open to the public in 2023.
Powerhouse is seeking a Development Director to develop and oversee fundraising strategies that support the organization’s inaugural events, ongoing programming, and institutional operations. The Development Director will report to the President  and will work closely with members of the executive team and board to identify funding and communications priorities that align with the organization’s strategic objectives, mission, and vision.
Applicants should have significant experience managing nonprofit fundraising efforts and leading and mentoring effective teams. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, independent, and a flexible thinker possessing the ability to collaborate with a wide array of people; detail-oriented while prioritizing big-picture strategies; enthusiastic about working with the organizational leadership to build Powerhouse’s development department from the ground up; and be able to pivot to meet the demands of a growing and evolving institution. The Development Director must also possess an understanding of the communications strategies needed to advance fundraising.Â
Responsibilities include:
•   Develop and lead results-oriented strategic fundraising plans for Powerhouse, including implementation and management of all fundraising activities not limited to: setting annual goals, organizing and completing a campaign, operational protocols; gift policies and other guidelines; moves management and data management systems, and support for the executive team and members of the Board toward achieving stated financial goals
•   Build and manage a development team responsible for implementing individual giving, special events, institutional giving, corporate partnerships, securing government grants, and other fundraising programs
•   Work with the executive team and board to define annual priorities, goals, and revenue and audience targets; and to define development initiatives, including major gifts programs, corporate sponsorships, and special eventsÂ
•   Support the President on-board development and stewardship efforts, including empowering board members to act as key spokespeople and fundraisers for the organizationÂ
•   Establish and steward relationships with all funders (corporate, foundation, government, individuals) and partner organizations; craft individualized solicitation plans and hold a portfolio of donors for frontline fundraising
•   Research, identify, and evaluate prospects, creating briefings as needed; create and execute individualized strategies toward giving, sponsorship, and/or cross-marketing opportunitiesÂ
•   Oversee Powerhouse’s annual fundraising calendar, including the submission of grant applications and reports•   Design and oversee compelling special events and donor cultivation opportunitiesÂ
•   Work in partnership with the design department to create and produce all fundraising collateral, presentations, and materialsÂ
•   Collaborate with the marketing department on the branding of audience- and membership development campaigns; a rental program; opening events; and program-specific PR plans Â
•   Craft, maintain, and enforce all protocols and policies for development department operations, including fundraising communications, prospect research, moves management, and gift acknowledgements and processing
•   Create and implement tracking and assessment systems and conduct ongoing internal evaluations, report on all solicitations with frontline fundraisers
•   Ensure full compliance for all donor relations based on industry-wide “best practices” and full IRS regulations.Â

•   Based in or willing to relocate to New York and possesses significant experience in fundraising and nonprofit arts managementÂ
•   Demonstrated ability to establish and meet ambitious fundraising goals, carry out long-term strategies, and participate in contributing to the overall management of the income forecasting for financial modeling
•   Proven capacity for management and supervision of staff and consultantsÂ
•   Deep knowledge of the funding community in New York City and beyond
•   Strong track record of building, sustaining, and growing long-term donor relationships with individuals, foundations, corporation, and government agencies
•   Exceptional interpersonal and writing skillsÂ
•   Familiarity with managing external relations and marketing plansÂ
•   Experienced public speaker who is able to effectively communicate Powerhouse’s programs and missionÂ
•   Tactical, multitasking thinker who can work simultaneously on immediate goals and long-term strategiesÂ
•   Ability to foster a collaborative, reflective, open, collaborative office cultureÂ
•   Comprehensive, up-to-date knowledge of nonprofit financial compliance and governance requirementsÂ
•   Experience working at start-up organizations a plusÂ
•   Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in the workplace Â
•   Proficient with Salesforce and other industry-standard software and technologiesÂ
•   Passionate about Powerhouse’s mission
Compensation & Benefits: Salary range is $120,000-$140,000 and commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, an employer-sponsored retirement plan, generous paid vacation, and a CitiBike membership.
