DevOps Engineer

The Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) Computational Sciences Infrastructure and Architecture (gCS I & A) seeks a talented and motivated DevOps Engineer to join us in supporting and driving software infrastructure solutions. Your responsibilities will include working with a diverse team of scientists, software engineering staff and IT professionals to deploy and support infrastructure solutions for a broad range of scientific groups. The job will utilize and build on your experience in software platforms, cloud computing, automation and operational support of a variety of existing and emerging technology and applications. The role will include ticket triage, frontline support, documentation and collaboration with the team to patch or enhance solutions for scientific software developers across gRED. You will join a growing team of HPC engineers, cloud computing engineers and laboratory IT professionals with a variety of technical skills and experience in both technology and life sciences.

Responsibilities:

• Assist scientists and application development teams adopt shared infrastructure services that are kubernetes, container and object based.
• Assist teams using VM/legacy based solutions to migrate applications using SDLC process to code based deployment and services.
• Maintain and build the gCS engineered and managed infrastructure services:
  • Diagnosis, troubleshooting and remediating platform and software incidents
  • Collaborate with the business and IT to improve the reliability and security of platform
  • Automate processes to reduce or eliminate manual steps and improve reproducibility
  • Work with business partners and support to develop monitoring and observability more effectively
  • Work with team on change management and infrastructure migrations, including preparing/coordinating tasks and communications for maintenance activities
  • Rigorously maintain technical systems and solutions documentation
  • Partner with engineering to patch and improve existing operational systems
• May include rotating on-call incident response schedule for support of critical production systems

Qualifications:

• Experience (5+ years) deploying and creating solutions based on current infrastructure tools such as Terraform, Vault, Ansible, Python and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Kubernetes workflow engines ( Kuberay, Kubeflow, Airflow etc.) preferred
• Linux expertise including system administration and troubleshooting skills desired
• Knowledge and use of standard SDLC and ITSM methodologies
• Minimum education level is a bachelor's degree, preferably in a technology discipline
• Experience in software engineer support and operations in AWS preferred
• Incident management with strong troubleshooting skills are required
• Strong technical skills in systems operations, cloud computing & storage technologies
• Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $122,600 - $227,600. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
