Job Description
Hearst Television is looking for a talented DevOps Manager to lead a team of DevOps engineers in developing, deploying, and maintaining a broad portfolio of diverse technology projects on AWS and GCP cloud platforms. The DevOps Manager will be responsible for designing, building, and supporting the processes and systems needed to drive our continuous integration environment, as well as the systems to deploy, manage, and monitor our production workloads. This role requires advanced technical and implementation experience with applications hosted in Kubernetes and Serverless architecture managed via Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
Responsibilities
The DevOps Manager will play a key role in ensuring our production systems' stability, scalability, and security by monitoring and optimizing the current software and infrastructure deployed across all environments. This will involve working closely with the development and operations teams to implement best practices for configuration management, deployment automation, and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD). In addition, the DevOps Manager will collaborate with other stakeholders to define the DevOps roadmap and participate in sprint planning to ensure that our infrastructure and services align with business objectives. Typical responsibilities will include:
- Lead and manage a team of DevOps engineers (onshore and offshore) to develop, deploy, and maintain a full-stack containerized microservices architecture on AWS and GCP cloud platforms.
- Build and deploy DevOps automation tools.
- Contribute to designing, deploying, and maintaining a full-stack containerized microservices architecture.
- Own the overall health, availability, performance, and capacity of the DevOps infrastructure, and improve the reliability of the services by writing code and building automation to prevent problem recurrence.
- Deploy, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain containerized (Docker) microservices across orchestrated (Kubernetes) environments.
- Lead projects and prioritize work to meet DevOps Engineering goals.
- Participate in sprint and release planning, bug triage, and other pertinent meetings.
- Execute and maintain industry best practices for security, compliance, and auditing, including a continuous improvement cycle.
- Work with monitoring and alerting tools and perform system log analysis using Datadog.
- Participate in on-call responsibilities, following defined procedures, owning and managing a runbook for each application, and maintaining system uptime to meet the SLAs.
- Mentor and manage other members of the team.
- Help with recruiting and training new team members.
Technical Qualifications
- BS in Computer Science or Equivalent (MS, Network Security Certification, or other relevant certification is a plus).
- 5-7 years of experience in DevOps within AWS or Google Cloud architectures, services, and/or environments, including automating Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
- 5-7 years of experience in software systems, programming, and infrastructure development and administration.
- Significant Kubernetes, Terraform, Fastly, Helm, and Docker experience.
- Strong experience in building and managing cohesive distributed teams.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL databases.
- Experience Leading architecture for DevOps-focused Agile teams.
- Overall Linux knowledge and CLI knowledge.
- Strong background in programming in Bash and Python (Golang and NodeJS is a plus).
- CI/CD build system experience (Travis, CircleCI, Github Action).
- Strong experience working with alerting and monitoring systems (Datadog and PagerDuty a plus).
- Advanced certification in AWS or Google Cloud is a plus.
- Advanced Cloud Security or DevSecOps experience is a plus.
Non-Technical Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on root cause analysis and continuous improvement.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies and project management tools like Atlassian Products is a plus.
- Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to motivate and mentor team members to achieve common goals.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of complex projects and initiatives, with a focus on delivering results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Highly adaptable and flexible, with the ability to embrace change and uncertainty and thrive in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
- Strong customer focus and a commitment to delivering high-quality services and solutions that meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
The estimated base salary range for this role is between $125,000 and $190,000. The actual base pay offered is dependent upon many factors, such as transferable skills, work experience, business needs, market demands and conditions, including geographic location where the work will be performed, and other factors permitted by law. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
