Diagnostic Systems Engineer
Job Description
Thermo King is hiring a Diagnostic Systems Engineer to join a world-class team developing the next generation of leading edge, sustainable products. This position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule and will be based out of our Minneapolis, MN location. Flexible work from home options available.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Diagnostic Systems Engineer is responsible for developing the design approach, requirements, and the logic to enable diagnosis of the system when a fault occurs, the system fails, or its operational performance is diminished. In addition, the condition of the unit, along with its performance, can be remotely monitored and opportunities for prognostics are considered.
The Diagnostic Systems Engineer will work across systems of low and high voltage devises, diesel engines, batteries, motors, controllers, other mechanical electrical components, and telematics devises.
The Diagnostic Systems Engineer will work with product engineering, reliability engineering, controls engineering, and service engineering to design and implement a diagnostic strategy that may involve:
- Identifying subsystems and modules require monitoring or fault detection
- Understanding if remote monitoring capability is to be provided, how is fault or monitoring data displayed or communicated
- Determining the mechanisms or sensors will be required in the product to provide this monitoring or fault detection
- Determining what devices on the unit will require the parameters be reconfigurable, or reconfigurable remotely
- Determining the external test equipment and connections that will be required
- Determining logic will be built into the system to diagnose and isolate problems vs. what analysis must be done externally to diagnose and isolate the problem
- Communication to controls engineering of new parameters to collect from the controller (e.g., from new sensors)
- Determining data transfer strategy that can satisfy end user requirements (data transfer rates needed, continuous data transfer, on-change data transfer, polling vs publish subscribe, reconfigure what parameters are collected over time, etc.)
- Built-in self-test (BIST) capabilities need
- Definition of all fault conditions and related actions, strive to minimize the fault group size (number components implicated in the root cause of the fault)
- Working with Service Engineering to produce and maintain relevant technical documentation used by the Service team and end users to maximize diagnostic and overall service efficiency
- Define requirements, refine, and maintain system specifications in product development
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline related to electronics, electrical engineering, systems, mechanical engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience
- 5+ years of diagnostics systems experience with Low and high Voltage mechanical-electrical Systems with a combination of theoretical and practical engineering experience
- Strong analytical and structured problem-solving capabilities and a knack for tackling problems that are unusual and complex
- Analysis capability to understand areas where fault isolation is poor: Advanced Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), advanced system-level analysis tools such as DSI international, Inc. eXpress
- Advanced knowledge of both analog and discrete instrumentation (sensors, actuators, controllers), data acquisition with integration with telematics
- Track record of working closely with cross-functional teams and stakeholders in a technology environment
- Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with internal and external partners with a wide range of backgrounds and expectations
- Strong written & verbal English communication skills to interface effectively with team members, customers, and stakeholders (senior leaders) in North America and other parts of the world.
