What you will do
The Digital Sales Engineer (DSE) position is part of our Building Solutions, North America business at Johnson Controls. We are creating "Smart Buildings" for our customers throughout the world. Collaborate with our Sales team to design and present Technology solutions to our customers. The focus of this position is OpenBlue Central Utility Plant Solutions.
The Digital Sales Engineer is a key role in Johnson Controls Digital Transformation. The role will partner with the local market Directors of Digital Sales to engage with Account Executives and teams to deliver on digital secured volume and margin goals. The DSE will deliver technology presentations and product demonstrations, understanding clients' defined outcomes and linking our software solutions to deliver on their outcomes. The DSE will be responsible for scoping solutions, coordinating site surveys, and creating and delivering technical proposal content. In addition, the DSE will engage in internal technical consulting within the assigned geography to educate the local team on the solution fit, positioning strategies, and opportunity identification via collaborative learning sessions in partnership with Director of Digital Sales. The DSE will partner with other internal resources to understand, refine and bring up complex opportunities for further definition and support, while partnering with the Digital Global Center of Expertise for pricing on standard solutions. The DSE will contribute to solution documentation and practice development efforts.
The DSE will be the expert on the core Johnson Controls OpenBlue solutions, including OpenBlue Enterprise Manager, Central Utility Plant, connected equipment and OpenBlue Vertical Market Solutions, with integration and supporting use cases. The DSE will be Badged on the OpenBlue Platform with a deep understanding of the foundational elements, enablers and roadmap.
This is a remote position and must reside in the geographic area to which the position is assigned. Travel is required.
How you will do it
- Understand how JCI's value prop and offerings match with customer requirements. This will require working closely with local area Digital Director of Sales, salespeople & customers and ensuring solid understand of how to communicate Digital offerings with an understanding of the competitive landscapes.
- Demo technology succinctly and effectively, including showing the features and functions of the products and services and answering questions on the fly. Comfortable saying "I don't know but will get back to you" and collaborating with additional domain experts as needed.
- Serve as a "field technical advocate" between customer, sales, and product team. Change is constant in digital, so the Sales Engineer will help guide a customer's journey to ensure alignment with the product road map. Know the landscape of the Area - the Johnson Controls team, the customers, and their needs.
- Operate as a critical team member in the sales process. Sales Engineers should be part of commit calls, understand what is being signed up for, where gaps exist, can provide good counsel to the sales org, consider themselves part of the sales org but have time to be top level technical specialists. (lab facilities, classes, virtual communities, access to product mgmt.)
- Work effectively with others - Sales people are not engineers and vice versa. Sales engineers must understand both sides and feel comfortable in the middle, as part of a winning sales team - getting satisfaction from being the technical expert and earning success with customers.
What we look for
Required
- Bachelors' degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Technical expertise in building solutions and digital technology
- 8 -12 Years field-based engineering or solutions engineering experience
- Willingness and ability to travel 30-40% within the defined Area
Preferred
- Degree in Computer Science or Engineering
- 8-12 years of technical and sales support experience
- Technical knowledge & digital proficiency
- Develop deep understanding of core digital offerings: Bridge with Integration Engine, OBEM, CUP, OB CEP, and OpenBlue Platform as an enabler.
- Experience in SaaS, Software Lifecycle and Roadmap, building technologies and business models
- Understanding of Johnson Controls field organization and how to effectively navigate to drive success
- Advanced communications skills - written, verbally - able to understand customer needs, challenge, disrupt, and clarify requirements, translate to solutions, negotiate solutions and resolve issues with peers, partners, and customers
- Can present on technology; comfortable delivering demos and technical presentations to a wider audience
- Experience in the building technology or construction industry, as a solution engineer, sales engineer, or digital engineer
- Experience working in a matrix organization, across business units and teams to create integrated solutions that address complex client and technological challenges
