Job Description Summary
Our team of accounting professionals perform complex accounting functions across the broad spectrum of assets in the real estate portfolio and build and maintain accounting policies, practices and reporting to meet regulatory and management requirements, while providing exceptional consultation, assistance and service to leaders and other internal customers. Nationwide Realty Investors (NRI), the real estate development affiliate of Nationwide, is a nationally recognized developer of large, complex, mixed-use projects with developments and investments in office, retail, sports and entertainment venues, hospitality and residential properties.

As a Director, you'll build and maintain business unit accounting policies, practices and standards to meet regulatory and management requirements. You'll also lead recording, consolidation, arrangement, reporting and preservation of all NRI financial data. We'll count on you to provide consultative accounting leadership.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensures the accounting, preparation, analysis and required filing of all relative financial documents and related data and exhibits for internal and external sources.
  • Reviews, advises, counsels, and actively participates in new systems developments and other systems related matters to ensure accuracy of all financial data.
  • Provides advice, counsel and assistance concerning accounting policies and practices.
  • Responds to applicable inquiries from state insurance departments, auditors, and other regulatory agencies. Provides financial information to various Nationwide offices to be used in the support of other filing, analysis and reporting requirements.
  • Directs the preparation of special reports, analyses and financials as requested by management and external agencies.
  • Supervises development and establishment of operational improvements that enhance efficiency and delivery of services to internal and external sources; advises staff participation in major projects and task teams.
  • Collaborates across functional areas and teams to cultivate and share viewpoints; encourages team members to seek opportunities to engage with each other to improve their learning across the team.
  • Generates and evaluates alternatives to get to a recommended solution for the organization; offers suggestions to senior leaders that highlight new methods for approaching problems.
  • Navigates change effectively and makes logical recommendations to tackle problems even with partial or imperfect information; maintains productivity and poise even during times of uncertainty.
  • Represents officer/executive as assigned. May attend trade association meetings as Company representative.
  • Drives a culture of coaching and feedback for personal and professional development, including develops talent for succession planning.
  • Directs associate management including: performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Accounting Officer/Executive. Manages a team of six or more Accounting professionals and support staff.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in accounting or finance. Post-graduate studies desirable.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPA preferred.

Experience: Typically, ten or more years accounting experience; real estate industry preferred. At least five years of management experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: GAAP and/or STAT accounting, tax and systems principles, practices, and procedures. Management policies, practices, and procedures. Advanced verbal and written communication skills for contact with all levels of associates including business unit leadership, external parties such as public accountants, state examiners, industry professionals and other clients. Ability to analyze and solve accounting problems, interpret financial documents and data, analyze legal requirements, examine and monitor accounting cycles and flows and review general ledger entries and audit work papers and schedules. Ability to lead associates in all aspects of assigned accounting record maintenance, financial statement preparation and special projects. Ability to establish internal controls and must periodically review and test for effectiveness, completeness, and possible introduction of new controls. Advanced Excel skills required.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and HR Business Partner.
