Position Overview
Based in Chicago, as a Director and Tax Counsel, Tax you will work with our expanding tax team and play a key role in achieving Company and investor tax objectives. Join a dynamic, growing company and experience a broad range of challenging issues primarily related to tax planning in the renewable energy industry and related general tax issues.Â

The Director and Tax Counsel, Tax will provide guidance to Capital Markets, various businesses, the tax compliance team, Accounting, and Treasury. The role will be responsible for delivering high-value, comprehensive, accurate, and timely tax advice. The role will include reviewing junior attorneys’ work and might include direct reports. This position will report directly to the Vice President and Tax Counsel (Head of Tax).Â
Responsibilities

Provide advice regarding U.S. federal income tax issues related to renewable energy and general tax matters (coordinate advice from other members of the tax team regarding state and local tax issues)

Work closely with the Capital Markets team to evaluate and analyze the tax impacts of complex financing transactions related to U.S. solar, wind, and energy storage projects in the U.S.

Review business transactions (including M&A) to identify tax implications and provide well-thought-out recommendations that account for Invenergy’s tax attributesÂ

Manage relationships with outside tax advisorsÂ

Work closely with tax team members who focus on tax legislationÂ

Stay current with changes in the tax lawÂ

Review junior attorneys’ work (also, the role might include direct reports)

Provide tax advice to the tax compliance team

Lead-cross functional initiatives from start to finish and manage special projectsÂ
Required Skills
-
Juris Doctor
-
7+ years of experience in business taxation in a multinational firm or professional firmÂ
-
Technical knowledge and experience in U.S. domestic tax law (including business tax planning, modeling, tax practice and procedure issues, entity selection, and partnerships)Â
-
Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Preferred Skills

LL.M. in Taxation or Master’s Degree in TaxationÂ

Prior experience in the energy, power, real estate, or infrastructure space is a plusÂ

Flexibility, ability, and desire to quickly learn new areas of the tax law as the business’s needs and the law evolveÂ

Ability to explain complex tax concepts simply

Ability to identify potential improvements and to propose workarounds and solutionsÂ

Familiarity with project or corporate finance transactionsÂ

Strong interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to work effectively in a team environmentÂ

Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment; Attentiveness to timeliness and tight deadlinesÂ

Excellent written and oral communication skillsÂ
