The API Practice Lead will be responsible for overseeing the strategy and roadmap for APIs managed as products for internal or external consumers. The API Lead will be required to understand the API Platform as well as API product consumers' needs. In addition, this individual will be responsible for prioritizing enhancements, measuring the business value of API products, and communication the impact and benefits to our most senior stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with IT leaders, business leaders, and software engineers to identify which APIs should be treated as products, based on the API's potential to be reused outside the context of one application.
  • Develop strong relationships with API product consumers, including Software Engineers and Development teams, to best understand their needs and provide support
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with API consumers to understand their needs.
  • Develop and curate a roadmap for the API product, using input from consumers to plan enhancements and improvements
  • Define and measure meaningful business key performance indicators (KPIs) for the API product.
  • Communicate and champion the business value of the API product to key stakeholders, including business and IT leaders
  • Utilize a data driven approach to define appropriate reporting metrics, focused on areas of opportunity to improve the impact of the API product
  • Evangelize API product usage with development teams to increase the adoption and consumption of API product capabilities.
  • Ensure consumers have the appropriate information and resources needed to use API products. This includes access to APIs, interactive documentation to help them understand API operations, and code samples or SDKs (Software Development Kits).
  • Provide support to API product consumers by answering questions and responding to feedback
  • Oversee the API product throughout its lifecycle, including managing API versioning and decommissioning.
  • Develop and maintain API specifications and documentation
  • Ensure alignment and adherence to corporate, financial and IT standards (such as architecture, compliance, and security)
  • Research and evaluate new API trends
  • Provide escalation support to the 24x7 on-call team for complex problems

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • 10+ years of experience in software development, product management, or another related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in managing highly technical teams.
  • Experience in building, launching, or using APIs, including API-based products and services.
  • Strong knowledge of API technologies such as REST, GraphQL, and event-driven APIs including AsyncAPI.
  • Experience with API security solutions and security frameworks including API token management, user access control using OAuth2 & JWT
  • Familiar with OpenID Connect, IAM, Identity Management, authentication, and authorization
  • Experiences in the Insurance domain and experiences in productization of Insurance business capabilities
  • Has strong integration background with good understanding of microservices architecture, event driven architecture, SOA, Streaming and API first mind set
  • Hands on experience with API management tools (like APIC, Apigee or others) and service integration bus like DataPower, IIB or others
  • Experience with AWS technologies
  • Solid understanding of DevSecOps practices
  • Experiences in creating or leading CoEs
  • Knowledge of OpenAPI 3.0 standards
  • Excellent collaboration and project management skills to manage priorities across internal teams and API consumers
  • Experience in building and implementing a product roadmap
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively manage and motivate resources to attain organizational and team goals.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented with the ability to work in a team environment and independently

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$144,400 - $216,600
