Director, Cloud DevOps
Job Description
The Northern Trust Cloud Center of Excellence (CCOE) is responsible for and supports Public Cloud Core Platforms, Cloud Architecture, Cloud Engineering, Cloud Operations, Cloud Product Ownership, Modern Application Development Acceleration, Private Cloud Platforms, and the Cloud Business Office (CBO).
The CCOE resides in Northern Trust's Enterprise Architecture group and provides foundational cloud infrastructure capabilities and cloud services to all business units globally. The CCOE is a high-performing Agile group, focused on delivering secure, scalable, automated, compliant, and cost-effective cloud solutions.
The DevOps Director will be part of Cloud Foundations team within the CCOE, reporting to the Senior Director of Cloud Foundation. The DevOps Director will manage a team of distributed Public Cloud Engineers, expert in Azure, AWS, and Snowflake, staffed by Northern Trust employees and consulting partners. The DevOps Director and team will be responsible for working directly with our customers who are application development teams in the Business Units to enable, deliver, and support their public cloud projects. Working with the Application DevOps engineers to make them self-sufficient in the longer term, while ensuring adherence to:
- Northern Trust's Cloud Standards and Security Controls
- Cloud guiding principles are rooted in full automation
- 100% Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and Policy as Code (PaC) DevOps Principles
- Manage 24/7 cloud operations to run and maintain a highly secure and optimized environment
- Adhering and contributing to the Public Cloud Center of Excellence Best Practices
Experience:
• 15+ years in a Technical related field with a Minimum of 5 years of hands on experience with AWS or Azure Cloud automation through CI/CD, cloud operations management, and Minimum of 3 years' experience managing a diverse global team of DevOps engineers.
- Proven track record of developing and deploying engineering frameworks for full end to end automation of Cloud platform and infrastructure services
- Strong experience in Public Cloud networking and Cloud security. Background from a highly regulated environment is preferred.
- In Depth knowledge of managing/supporting multi and hybrid cloud deployments in an Enterprise environment
- Familiar with developing and reviewing 3rd party SOWs and executing them with procurement
- Strong experience implementing and managing DevOps tools and scripting languages such as Azure ADO, Github, Gitlab, Jenkins, GO, Terraform, ARM, CFT, Bash, Ruby, PowerShell, Ansible, Python, and others
- Proven track record in Infrastructure Provisioning through automation (IAC)
- Strong experience in communicating effectively to management at all levels
- Strong organizational and leadership skills
- Strong background in cloud monitoring tools, operational dash-boarding, etc
Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for:
- Formulating and delivering Cloud DevOps engineering roadmaps
- You will manage your team and apply operational and strategic management skills
- Your management responsibilities will include hiring, performance reviews, compensation decisions, capital and expense budgeting, and career development
- You will achieve some of your goals through the work of others
- You will be accountable for the performance and the results of multiple related teams that are globally disbursed.
- You will develop both tactical and strategic departmental plans, including business, production and organizational priorities.
- Backlog and Scrum/Agile team management
- Partnering with Cyber Security and Risk leaders during all internal and external audits
- Remediation of audit findings as it pertains to the cloud platform and championing the remediation across the business areas
- Partnering with the Cloud COE Business office to run and maintain a cost efficient environment
- Vendor management
Your Team will be responsible for:
- The plan, build, and run of Northern Trust's public cloud services with 24/7 support which includes a staff of onshore and offshore DevOps team
- Participate in security initiatives, including access control and vulnerability testing
- Build and test automation tools for infrastructure provisioning
- Support code deployments in all environments
- Innovate and continuous modernization of DevOps delivery and service models
- Develop system health metrics both for real time monitoring and usability recommendations
- Maintain day-to-day management and administration of projects
- Document and design various processes
- Collaborate with the development team on shared objectives
- Provision new services in Azure and AWS with Terraform and other relevant orchestration tools
- Manage and deploy custom scripts in a heavily automated environment
- Manage and execute multiple concurrent projects
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related discipline and 5+ years of experience managing engineering, operations, development, and/or support teams in a public cloud environment
