Director, Cloud Platform Engineering & SRE

The Director of Cloud Platform Engineering & SRE is responsible for leading and growing our Platform Engineering team, which builds and maintains the cloud platform on which our software runs and the tooling our developers use to leverage the platform.  This also includes leading our Reliability Engineering team, which builds the tooling and processes around observability, incident response, and service availability.

• Collaborate with peers in other departments
• Identify projects that serve multiple strategic goals and prioritize accordingly.
• Clearly articulate when projects are not currently able to be prioritized.
• Know and track the long-term goals in this area
• Partner with Product Management and our Staff-level Engineer(s) to manage a 12 month roadmap in this area.
• Ensure development of a strategy for how to use AWS according to best practices.
• Arrive at those goals in cooperation with your teams and other SMEs
• Ensure documentation about this plan is produced, digestible, and maintained
• Communicate the strategy out to leadership and be able to relate them to company goals
• Participate in quarterly and annual planning processes to advocate for short-term projects that move us towards long-term goals, and ensure the teams aren’t getting into the weeds too early in the process
• Capacity plan for growth, in traffic and other dimensions, and provide some predictions for maintaining level of service
• Manage vendors and spend on cloud platforms such as AWS and Datadog
• Collaborate with other leaders to define SLAs/SLOs/metrics, determine how to measure them, and determine whether we are meeting them
• Manage the managers that report up through this division and help plan organizational growth for the future. Currently there is one team and one manager, but potential to split out teams and grow org based on strategy you define in collaboration with the VP of Engineering.
• Proactively plan and advocate for team and organizational capacity, clarifying needs, requisitioning positions, and managing the hiring process to fill those positions.

• Manage the roadmap for your organization from the technical perspective, in partnership with Product Management.  Balance sourcing input from the team(s), stakeholders, product partners, the business needs, and your own expertise. 
• Balance buy-in and consensus with strategic decision making 
• Have hands-on experience (has done the things and could jump in and help if necessary) balanced with strategic planning and leadership experience.
• Needs to be able to delegate - trust but verify
• Experience managing engineers and/or other managers
• Fostering and leading diverse, healthy teams
• Roots roadmap decisions in business value and ROI, balancing short-term and long-term investment and results

Experience with the following makes you a better fit:

• Direct experience as a software developer, architect, DevOps engineer, or cloud practitioner, including AWS certification(s)
• Building software and/or platforms where security, regulatory compliance and high availability are critical
• Communicating to leadership team, and clearly articulating vision and goals to teams
• Accountability for large-scale Software-as-a-Service products with significant customer bases and revenue
• Experience working in an agile environment, with a focus on fast cycle times and continuous deployment. We ship to production multiple times daily.
