Director, Data Governance and Standards
Job Description
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
About the Role
The New York Times is a thriving, data-driven organization. We’re looking for transformational talent to ensure that our data is organized and governed in ways that facilitate that use of data.
You will partner with Engineering, Product, and Data to set and enforce standards for analyst and data scientist behavior. Your end goal is to create an environment where the bulk of analytical time is spent on getting answers, not searching for data. You will need to be strategic and tactical, have a track record of improving data infrastructure, and have endless curiosity. You will report to the Executive Director of Data Architecture.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with teams across the organization to understand the analytical needs of data, and work with product and engineering teams to create or purchase products that facilitate data discovery and data quality
- Create, maintain, and enforce coding standards, including documentation, code review, naming conventions, permissioning, and data deletion
- Guide analysts and data scientists in SQL best practices, managing query office hours and other outreach and training activities
- Coordinate the transition to dbt, which includes managing the vendor relationship with dbt, coordinating training, ensuring analysts develop the necessary skills to implement dbt correctly, providing dbt guidelines, and holding additional office hours as new teams onboard to dbt
- Partner with analytics leaders to develop and implement a standardized process to manage analyst-owned datasets. This includes developing clear ownership guidelines on datasets and KPI definitions to facilitate better data governance and management
- Collaborate with Data Architecture and engineering teams to roll-out data management tools around data monitoring, data quality and data discoverability (Monte Carlo, DataHub).
- Own projects from end-to-end from scoping and definition to documentation
Basic Qualifications:
- 8+ years of progressively complex experience in data science, analytics, or data management/governance
- 6+ years of experience with data modeling and developing large datasets
- Mastery of SQL
- Experience with big data environments such as GCP, AWS, and/or Snowflake
Preferred Qualifications:
- 1+ years of experience in data visualization/reporting and data viz tools such as Mode, Looker, or Tableau
- 1+ years of experience with dbt
If you see a job opening here that might be a good fit for you, we encourage you to apply. We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision plans for employees and their families, health and wellness programs, a 401(k) plan, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation, paid parental leave, and much more.
