Director - Data Licensing
Job Description
The role:
Morningstar consumes and/or redistributes market, index and reference data from over 200+ exchanges and data providers to power Morningstar's data, research, investment management and index businesses. Additionally, Morningstar proprietary content is licensed to customers through key software, APIs and data products within the Enterprise division. In this position, you will lead the data licensing function within the Enterprise Division ensuring that appropriate licenses are in place, compliant and commercially optimized. Additionally, this role will have responsibility for developing and running the outbound licensing/compliance function for Morningstar's licensed products. This role will benefit the organization by minimizing vendor and exchange audit risks, negotiating more favorable data deals by partnering with the sourcing function, providing usage metrics for reducing/optimizing spend and securing new revenue from enhanced customer licensing compliance. This position will be based in Chicago.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the data licensing efforts for 3rd party vendors across the Enterprise Division, including index vendors, exchanges, ratings agencies, securities identifiers, etc.
- Build senior level relationships across key data vendors to ensure Morningstar understands key changes to the vendor's business or licensing policies and maintains a 360 degree perspective of key vendors.
- Gather detailed knowledge about internal data needs across several business lines/products/platforms and partner with the business, data compliance and procurement to negotiate the most favorable commercial licenses.
- Develop/implement a framework for a new outbound licensing/compliance function for Enterprise data products and platform.
- Lead a team of compliance analysts to analyze customer usage trends, identify potential misusage, and partner with Sales/CSMs to resolve commercially and bring customer back into compliance.
- Ensure that all agreements are current and stored in MDM, partnering with Procurement to keep current with necessary business accountability.
- Represent Morningstar in FISD groups, to influence and drive improvements and consistency around global policies affecting Morningstar's data usage.
- Support the Head of Data Compliance for tracking, training and education on acceptable data usage rights across Morningstar, particularly within Enterprise, and help with favorable resolution of 3rd party audits.
- Maintain/support the budgeting and forecasting for 3rd party data spend across the Enterprise division.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of related leadership experience in data licensing, distribution and licensing/compliance/audits in exchange, data vendor or financial services firm.
- Deep experiences with market data policies, data contracting, exchanges/index vendor landscape and data licensing terminologies.
- Active and effective market data industry association experiences for addressing and influencing data topics.
- Strong negotiation skills and effective in leveraging broader relationship for more favorable outcomes.
- Experience managing and creating budgets and forecasts.
- Proven people development and coaching skills.
- Bachelor's degree; MBA or other advanced degree/accreditation is strongly preferred.
