The Scoop:

The Director, Data Platform Design and Strategy oversees several functional areas within the database platform under Technology Services. This position works at the strategic level for optimizing and streamlining processes and defining database platform design and strategy roadmaps. The position also oversees enterprise projects from the initiation phase through production readiness.

What You Get To Do:

  • Creates and maintains strategy and forward-looking data product execution plans for enterprise operational data platform
  • Develop and maintain data platform roadmaps that is aligned with meeting enterprise vision and goal
  • Works in partnership with technical experts, business analysts, and developers from strategic partners (internal and external) to design and guide new IT solutions
  • Manages data architects, data modelers, database engineers and enterprise architects
  • Manages and leads subordinates in the management and administration of data platform
  • Aligns and collaborates closely with internal departments and external strategic partnerships to direct multiple initiatives
  • Provides technical guidance that strikes a balance with the need to deliver on a deadline and still meet long-term strategic objectives
  • Monitors and directs all database engineering functions to demonstrate solution design meets standard architecture considerations and approvals to include: (1) standard database structures, (2) industry standards, (3) common components and reusable programs (4) security and performance levels, (5) system interfaces and dependencies
  • Champions for ways to automate and improve current processes/solutions within the database engineering area
  • Lead the assessment of current systems, evaluate solutions in the marketplace, creates technical vision/roadmap for implementing state of the art systems and get buy-in from senior leadership to execute
  • Leads and provides direction in build/buy decisions with regards to enterprise data platform
  • Creates and implements action plans to mitigate risks and resolve issues, working with representatives from stakeholders across the company
  • Manages conflicting priorities and multiple projects effectively
  • Provides day-to-day management and supervision for data engineering team by directing and coordinating activities consistent with established goals, objectives, and policies
  • Provides hands-on design guidance and documentation as needed
  • Mentors team members from both a technical and professional career enhancement perspective by offering constructive feedback
  • Develops and maintains solid working relationships with employees and management in cross-functional areas
  • Keeps up to date with emerging IT trends and technologies and the industry's best practices

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages and provides direction to staff in the data platform area. Responsible for establishing the overall design and data strategy for the enterprise. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Supervisory responsibilities include:

  • Interviewing, hiring, training, mentoring, and coaching employees
  • Planning, assigning, and distributing work for maximum efficiency
  • Conducting performance review and providing appropriate and timely feedback
  • Addressing conflicts in a professional and ethical manner
  • Supports and enforces company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner, taking corrective action whenever necessary

Client Responsibilities

This is an internal and external client facing position that requires excellent customer service skills and interpersonal communication skills (listening/verbal/written). One must be able to manage difficult or emotional client situations; respond promptly to client needs; solicit client feedback to improve service; and ensure client commitments are met in a timely manner.

Education and/or Experience

For consideration candidates will need:

  • Requires Bachelor's degree in engineering or related (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Requires a minimum of ten (10 ) years of demonstrated expertise and hands-on technical experience in database engineering, data modeling and Enterprise Architecture.
  • Requires a minimum of 8 years' experience managing and mentoring technical professionals
  • Experience working in a startup is preferred, but not required
  • Leadership experience may be substituted with ten (10) years of MedImpact experience plus an appropriate external leadership training program and internal mentorship with a seasoned leader (VP )

Computer Skills

  • Proficient in data architecture, data topology and emerging data technology and strategies
• Expert level experience in at least one Architecture Framework (e.g., TOGAF), Object Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD), and Design Patterns

• Architecture and design skills including background in Mobile and Web Apps, APIs, Micro Frontends, and Micro Services.

• Expertise in at least one of the cloud service provider solutions (e.g., AWS, Azure, etc.)

• Enterprise Software Development experience in with one or more Object-oriented Programming languages

  • Expertise in Database Design and modeling with Erwin
  • Proficient with MS Suite (Word, Excel, Visio, Outlook, Project) to create data strategy roadmaps, manage priorities and share vision for organization growth
  • Experience in re-piping or re-engineering of data infrastructure
  • Experience working with data infrastructure on prem and cloud
  • Knowledge of software architecture and system design skills
  • Experience in healthcare industry is a plus

  • Extensive knowledge of strategy setting, program requirement, product development and project management methodologies

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Experience working with agile methodology is a plus
