Position Description
Origis Energy is looking for a Director of Energy Storage System (ESS) Technology to join our team. This person will join an experienced team with the main objective of driving team strategy for the BESS technology selection, procurement process, and standards across ESS and the service contracts. Origis plans to procure over 2GWh of batteries over the next few years with the mission to develop best-in-class procurement processes to effectively reap maximum value across each project.
Key Responsibilities
Technology Evaluation and Selection
- Responsible for evaluation of the ESS components and integrators. Develop and maintain strong technical relationship with the key suppliers to influence their roadmap and service offerings. The key suppliers include integrators, batteries, inverters, EMS/SW and MV transformers.
- Serve as Origis’s point of contact for integrators and component vendors to optimize the solutions to meet the both the quality and economic goals of the projects.
- Evaluate and analyze technical risk in contracting with vendors and maintain supplier quality standards to ensure the Company's quality requirements are met.
- Implementation and oversight of QA/QC programs to qualify key components, as necessary.
- Provide timely guidance of technical specification and price forecast to project management, finance, business development, project development, and other functions within Origis.
- Manage technical engineering workflow during the evaluation and technology selection process.
Procurement & Implementation
- Provide technical leadership to procurement team during the RFP process and contract negotiation that deliver against business objectives and achieves sustainable relationships with suppliers.
- Ensure the development of an integrated approach to contracting and the negotiation of contracts including provision for appropriate terms & conditions and performance guarantees.
- Participate in site and factory acceptance tests and provide technical support during the during the BESS constructions phase, as necessary.
- Work with Origis Services and Asset Management team to ensure that the performance goals of the systems are met and incorporate operational learnings to the future contracts.
Analysis and Strategy
- Work with procurement team to establish and execute the ESS procurement strategy at Origis.
- Create and implement best procurement in processes for large scale BESS including developing appropriate performance metrics for external suppliers.
- Synthesis technology trends and market intelligence with internally gathered intelligence to perform forecasts for major equipment.
- Monitor and evaluate the risk of geopolitical and regulatory initiatives the impact the supply chain and develop the mitigation or contingency plans for the sourcing options.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS/MS in Engineering. MBA plus.
- Strong product knowledge of battery technologies and ESS control systems
- Thorough understanding of the inner working of battery suppliers, inverter manufacturers and ESS integrators
- Familiarity with evolving quality factors and trends within the battery industries
- QA/QC experience on battery companies and ESS integrators
- 8+ years of increasingly progressive technology evaluation and selection experience
- Experience in global sourcing and international negotiations
- Experience and understanding of terms and conditions of equipment contracts
- Experience with sourcing and equipment/material and services contract negotiation
