Description
We are looking for a Director, Engineering to join our mission-driven team. As an integral part of a Product and Engineering department, you will join forces with the VP, Product and Engineering (to whom you will also report) in our continued effort to inspire people to eat more plants!
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about building an excellent customer experience, hiring and managing a team of highly productive engineers to service both front-end and back-end platform needs, and can lay the foundation for technology that gets plant-based meals into the hands of millions of customers.
This position will play an important role in defining the technical future of Purple Carrot's website, its fulfillment technology, and its scalable integration with 3rd party services.
As the Director, Engineering you will be focused on building and managing a team of engineers, working closely with stakeholders teams to develop and launch new features, both for consumers as well as for internal stakeholders. You will take a strategic lens to what needs to be built, how to prioritize it, how to synthesize customer needs into launched deliverables.

Location
- Purple Carrot HQ is in Needham, MA and prefers local candidates to work in a hybrid model.
- This role has limited travel (< 10%) to partner sites or other business related meetings. Regular travel to Needham, MA HQ is expected if outside the area.
- Regular interaction with our parent company in Japan is required for this role, which sometimes includes working hours outside normal business hours
On the Plate
- Hire and Lead a team of up to 4 engineers
- Manage day-to-day software development team activities
- Report on progress against goals
- Distill requirements into actionable objectives
- Present tradeoffs when considering technical solutions and objectives
- Assist with ad-hoc projects and tasks as necessary.
Main Ingredients for the Role
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
- Able to commute to office in Needham
- 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams
- Experience partnering with product OR program management teams
- 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers
- 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer - Engineering or related technical discipline
- 3+ years of experience designing and developing solutions in distributed systems environments
- Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
Extra Special Sauce
- Experience hiring and building a team of software engineers, QA engineers, Data engineers, Principal Engineers
- Experience with building solutions using Amazon Web Services
- Experience building both front-end and back-end services using a micro-services approach
- Experience integrating with 3rd party service providers
- Hands-on expertise with building and operating back-end service
- Exceptional customer relationship skills including the ability to discover the true requirements underlying feature requests, recommend alternative technical and business approaches, and lead engineering efforts to meet aggressive timelines with optimal solutions
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.
