Director - Enterprise Strategy Management
Job Description
The Strategy & Rare Disease (STARS) organization drives the long-term strategic direction of Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI)/North America Operations (NAO) and leads all US commercial efforts for Novo Nordisk's Rare Disease portfolio. The mandate of STARS is to facilitate the development and to coordinate the execution of the long-term strategy, defining a sustainable business model in US beyond a 5-year time horizon. This department serves as the insiders of the US market when informing and help shaping upstream decisions around future investments and assets. The Rare Disease portfolio includes products in the hemophilia and growth disorders therapeutic areas, new products in the pipeline, and products acquired through business development efforts in existing and new areas. The STARS team collaborates and partners with groups across NAO, Research & Early Development, Development, innovation hubs across NN, other affiliates, and global. The Position
Responsible for helping to define and pull-through the enterprise strategic plan needed to create and sustain a consistently performing North American organization in alignment with internal and external performance expectations. Provides leadership in support of Novo Nordisk, Inc.'s (NNI) strategic road map, inclusive of multiple levels of NNI and Global collaboration and inputs. This role will focus and lead teams toward development and execution of cross-organizational strategic choices that optimize short, mid and longer-term North American investments and resources. Collaborates with NNI leaders to help drive strategy implementation, governance, communication and change management.
Relationships
Reports to the VP - Enterprise Strategy. Internal interactions may include NNI Executive Team, Executive Office, NNI LT, functional leads, NNA/S Corporate Strategy and other HQ counterparts to ensure strategic coordination across Novo Nordisk, Inc. External relationships may include interactions with various subject matter experts and vendors based on the needs of special projects or implementation of new programs.
Essential Functions
- Actively engage with key stakeholders on pull through of the 3-5 year NAO strategic planning process with ET, LT and functional leaders in alignment with HQ-related functions
- Encourages and facilitates cross-functional coordination of strategic planning work and alignment to company and BU-specific priorities
- Synthesizes and assesses BU-level strategies to ensure collective alignment toward ambition and NNI enterprise strategic goals
- Develops strategic recommendations based on internal and external analyses and investment alternatives
- Strategy Management
- Actively manages 3-5 year business strategy for Novo Nordisk, Inc. to ensure clear and focused strategic direction and alignment for NAO and to the Business Units
- Activates NNI planning process roadmap to guide and coordinate various levels of cross-organizational strategic planning, capital planning, budgeting, annual investment allocation and other associated resourcing
- Identifies, prioritizes and reviews key strategic priorities and themes
- Maintains an enterprise lens to ensure enterprise-wide initiatives, scenarios, risks, and opportunities are reflected in NAO and BU strategic decisions.
- Ensures alignment of BU and Functional (Diabetes Sales, Market Access, and Medical) processes to NNI's enterprise strategy to drive simplicity, accuracy, and efficiency relative to pursuing common goals
- Partners with BUs to facilitate, formulate and align strategic options and impact on business
- Conducts benchmarking, market landscape assessments, scenario planning analyses and business case development in support of strategic recommendations and decisions
- Develops and analyses strategic questions/options and provide evidenced-based recommendations
- Conducts trade-off analyses to inform investment decisions
- Partners with Commercial Effectiveness (CE), Finance, Human Resources and BU leaders to drive and align strategic planning inputs and outputs
- Aligns strategy planning implementation in coordination with BUs
- Manages alignment of strategy metrics with BSC planning
- Monitors strategy progress (i.e., metrics and KPIs) and determine execution course corrections
- Develop and manage growth, efficiency, innovation and sustainability initiatives, in alignment with ET-agenda and anchored to NNI Enterprise Strategy
- Collaborates with communications and change management teams to develop and deploy communications strategy
- Serves as liaison and strong collaborator with NNI and Global stakeholders
Physical Requirements
0-10% overnight travel required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent required; MBA preferred
- A minimum of 10 years of progressively relevant corporate business strategy development and planning, marketing and brand management, consulting, commercial operations experience required; pharmaceutical or CPG industries strongly preferred
- Business Development and finance experience strongly preferred
- Understanding of the external marketplace and familiarity in metabolic disease areas preferred
- Strategic thinker with excellent problem solving skills and the ability to work with senior management and communicate effectively to the highest level of executives
- Strong decision-making skills through demonstrated ability to leverage evidenced-based insights and sound judgement into strategy development, deployment and optimization
- Project management, process development and change management experience a plus
- Ability to manage competing priorities; strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to streamline and simplify complex concepts for broader audience
- Proven cross-functional collaboration skills with ability to influence multiple levels of leadership
