Job Description
As an HR department of one, the NMAAM Director, Human Resources will lead the daily activities and provide strategic direction of the Human Resource (HR) function. As a part of the senior management team, works to set the human resources strategy for the company and then directs and leads day-to-day activities associated with its execution.Â
NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving the legacy and celebrating the accomplishments of the many music genres created, influenced, or inspired by African Americans. The Museum will share the story of the American Soundtrack, integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $3,125 to $3,750 per semi-monthly pay period which annualizes to $75,000 to $90,000 per year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
- Provides leadership and coaching to the executive team and management level employees.
- With input from the executive leadership, as well as various senior leaders, establish a sound plan of management succession that supports continuity of services for NMAAM.
- In support of the NMAAM’s strategic goals, develop and manage comprehensive strategic recruiting and retention programs to meet the human capital requirements of all departments in service to the organization. Oversees recruitment and hiring of top talent.
- Oversees workforce planning to include budgeting and staffing levels.
- Maintains positive employee relations and serves as a resource for employees.
- Maintains compliant policies and procedures; ensures consistent application of policies and practices.
- Recruits, interviews, and facilitates the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
- Implements new hire orientation and employee recognition programs.
- Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
- Leads and enhances employee engagement programs for the organization including service awards and employee recognition programs.
- Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, professional licensure, and aptitude exams and certifications.
- Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
- Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- BA/BS degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required or year-for-year equivalent experience in Human Resources may be substituted for degree
- Four (4) plus years of progressively responsible human resource management experience required.
- Experience gained as an HR department of one a plus and preferred.
- Demonstrated mastery of HR Generalist functions.
- Demonstrated people management skills.
- SHRM-SCP or SPHR preferred.

- Assist in the planning and implementation of special events.
- Attend staff meetings.
