Director, Human Resources - Commercial and Talent Leadership
Job Description
Reporting to the SVP, Human Resources, the Director HR – Commercial and Talent Leadership will have two primary key focuses for the company. First, they will take the leadership role working with our RPO and contingent recruiters, hiring managers, and support staff to lead and coordinate all aspects of a critical company growth trajectory over the next two years, growing by nearly 130-140 employees during that time. The successful candidate will have a proven record of success as a strong project leader, vendor manager, and strong internal relationship skills to demonstrate strong leadership on this critical company goal/initiative. Secondly, they will have demonstrated experience and leadership skills to enable a commercial organization to build from scratch over the next two years and beyond. This will mean that the chosen candidate has done this before, knows the intricacies and uniqueness in a commercial organization and has demonstrated success with a prior Commercial organization and CCO.
Key Responsibilities:
- The Director, Human Resources - Commercial and Talent Leadership will play a key role in cultivating our CymaBay culture with our Commercial organization and field team as it grows and evolves. The responsibilities of this role will span: performance management, employee retention and development, leader and manager coaching, employee relations and HR compliance policy creation, recruiting leadership and all other aspects of HR.
- Utilize HR expertise and in-depth understanding of the business to be a strategic and trusted advisor to the Commercial leadership team to champion people strategies that drive business results
- Implement, lead and continuously improve talent development tools and processes
- Work very collaboratively and effectively with our recruiting vendors and sourcing experts along with hiring managers and all Company leaders, as required, to manage and report out on our progress against our aggressive hiring and growth plans across CymaBay.
- Partner with leadership and talent acquisition to develop proactive organizational staffing strategies to recruit and retain top caliber talent in a high-performance Commercial environment
- Provide day to day performance management guidance to Commercial line management (coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions). Facilitate the performance review process in pursuit of a culture of accountability and results-orientation, linking organizational and employee performance
- Proactively reduce employee relations issues with a pragmatic approach grounded in business need and results. Ensure compliance to company practices and state and federal employment laws; including thorough and objective investigations and recommending appropriate action
- Work closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build a positive Commercial culture aligned with CymaBay’s culture and help managers coach and employee effectiveness and retention
- Leverage HR data (i.e. engagement surveys, hiring metrics, exit surveys) to help leaders identify, diagnose, and respond to people trends in their business; based on analyses, develop and provide strategic recommendations on programs and HR initiatives
- Ensure that all commercial people programs and policies are directionally aligned with and support overall CymaBay company people programs and policies, except in market-driven situations that may warrant a different approach.
- Establish and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with other G&A functional partners in HR, Legal, Finance, IT, Facilities, etc.
- Lead weekly meetings (or any others as required to be effective) with other HR leadership and our key RPO partner to identify and solve for barriers or issues in the overall talent acquisition to keep hiring plans on track and within approved budget and related budget timing.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Human Resources, Organizational Development or Business Administration; preferably a Masters' degree in an HR-related field or PHR/SPHR certification
- 8+ years of recent progressive relevant HR experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of HR-related principles & deep knowledge of state and federal compliance and regulations
- Experience in biotech, life sciences, pharma or similar industry is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in consulting with leaders to identify appropriate development experiences and solutions to improve individual and team performance
- Must be self-motivated and able to work both independently and part of a team, to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed environment
- Capable of coaching and training individuals in critical HR competencies
- Ability to diagnose gaps between current and desired organization performance and deploy actions to resolve gap, including organization redesign, process change, coaching and training.
- Elevated level of interpersonal skills to demonstrate active listening, provide coaching and advising to all levels within the organization and handle sensitive and confidential situations
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Excellent interpersonal, influence, and communications skills with the proven ability to communicate effectively across all departments and levels of the organization.
- Proven ability to meticulously manage the details and logistics of talent acquisition including project leading all aspects of our strong hiring initiatives in both 2023 and 2024.
- Proven ability and experience as an active HRBP and strong thought leader with Commercial function leadership in a commercially approved biotech or pharmaceutical company.
- Excellent written communication and slide preparation skills with a track record of generating clear, accurate, and compelling materials.
- Flexibility and adaptability: demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced working environment and to work diplomatically collaboratively and tactfully with others at all levels in the organization.
- Proven capability to appropriately challenge status quo, drive and support innovation, including new ideas to streamline and enhance processes rather than solely implement current tactics.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Newark, California is $210,000 - $230,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. CymaBay is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
